Español IV
Introduction of Course
The fourth year of Spanish has been designed to meet the needs of students who have a genuine interest in acquiring fluency in Spanish. The majority of this class will be conducted in Spanish and students are expected to use the target language spontaneously to communicate. Students are expected to have mastered the major grammar concepts from Spanish III and must be prepared to work independently, utilize the target language and apply critical thinking strategies to the study of Spanish. Students will review and learn grammar concepts including: present indicative, present perfect, present subjunctive, preterit versus imperfect, imperfect subjunctive, future, conditional, plu-perfect, por versus para and articles. Students will engage with authentic materials regularly and instruction will center around thematic units such as; identity, fears and childhood experiences, what I want for my life, new year/new me, the value of our ideas, and hopes and dreams. Assessment techniques include performance and formative assessments as well as end of unit Integrated Performance Assessments. Students will experience the language and improve their skills by utilizing the following modes of communication: Interpersonal speaking, Presentational Speaking, Presentational Writing and Interpretive Reading and Writing.
Proficiency Targets
Interpretive Reading:
I can easily understand the main idea of texts related to everyday life, personal interests, and studies. I can sometimes follow stories and descriptions about events and experiences in various time frames.
Interpretive Listening:
I can easily understand the main idea in messages and presentations on a variety of topics related to everyday life and personal interests and studies. I can usually understand a few details of what I overhear in conversations, even when something unexpected is expressed. I can sometimes follow what I hear about events and experiences in various time frames.
Interpersonal Communication:
I can participate with ease and confidence in conversations on familiar topics. I can usually talk about events and experiences in various time frames. I can usually describe people, places, and things. I can handle social interactions in everyday situations, sometimes even when there is an unexpected complication.
Presentational Speaking:
I can make presentations in a generally organized way on school, work, and community topics, and on topics I have researched. I can make presentations on some events and experiences in various time frames.
Presentational Writing:
I can write on topics related to school, work, and community in a generally organized way. I can write some simple paragraphs about events and experiences in various time frames.

Also, any student who talks, for whatever reason without the permission of the teacher, during a formal assessment or an assignment where he/se is asked not to speak will receive a zero for the assessment.
Cheating in its various forms will not be tolerated.
