Halloween at Glen Grove School
Halloween at Glen Grove School
The Glen Grove Halloween Parade will take place on Wednesday, October 31st at 12:55 PM. After returning from Pumpkin Caroling at the Abington Senior Center, our 4th graders will lead our school in the annual costume parade. We will exit the back doors of Glen Grove, snake around the grassy area behind the school and re-enter our building through the front doors. Parents are welcome to attend the parade. If you would like to be a spectator, please position yourself on the fields behind our school.
If it is raining on Halloween, the parade will be cancelled. Students will participate in a small, modified version of the parade in our gym for students ONLY, as it would be a very serious breech of fire department safety regulations if we were to have our entire student body and all of our guests in our gym at one time.
CLASSROOM PARTIES: The wonderful room parents of the Westbrook/Glen Grove PTA are busy eliciting volunteers to help organize the classroom Halloween parties. Please note the following:
In alignment with our other District 34 schools, there can be no more than eight room parents/volunteers who will attend classroom parties. We very much appreciate the room parents who plan these parties and organize the volunteers, and all of us want to ensure that our classrooms are not overcrowded and that the adults present are there to assist with activities and supervision. Please look for a communication from your room parent team regarding our Halloween parties in the near future, and be sure to sign up to assist with one of the fun activities that the room parents have planned. If you have not received a communication from your room parents, please feel free to reach out to your room parent team and express your desire to volunteer.
COSTUME INFORMATION: - To ensure our activities are safe and appropriate for the school setting please note the following:
- Avoid costumes portraying violent characters or monsters.
- NO weapons (real or look-alike) may be brought to school as part of a costume.
- Masks are NOT allowed.
- Aerosol containers are NOT allowed on school premises.
- Students are NOT allowed to wear costumes to school. They will change into their
costumes after lunch/recess and before the parade. - Students who require things like hair spray, make-up, hair color, etc. may have those
items pre-applied so they can be worn to school.
REMINDERS
PARKING - The parking lot at Glen Grove will not be able to accommodate all of our guests as we must keep our circular drive and loading zones completely free of vehicles during the school day and during dismissal. So, please consider walking or carpooling. Once our lot is full, you may park on neighboring side streets.
DISMISSAL- To avoid the congestion in the hallways that all of the extra bodies cause, guests are encouraged to be out of the building by 2:20 PM. You must exit through the FRONT doors, only.
SIGNING STUDENTS OUT BEFORE DISMISSAL – If you are taking your child home with you before dismissal, you must come through the front office with your child and drop off your name tag–a more efficient way of signing out. If you are taking your child with you at dismissal, there is no need to sign him/her out. Please just inform the classroom teacher that your child is leaving with you, especially if they normally ride the bus.
Finally, please note that to ensure the same level of safety on a party day that we expect in our schools every day of the year, we are asking that all adults who enter the building sign in through the front office and obtain a sticker identifying them as a volunteer.
Fall Festival For Students Who Do Not Celebrate Halloween
STUDENTS WHO DO NOT CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN - If your family does NOT celebrate Halloween, we want to encourage you to please send your child to school that day. All children will spend the morning engaged in typical learning activities followed by lunch. After lunch, students who do not celebrate Halloween will attend the Fall Festival in our Learning Center, where Mrs. Berichon, our drama teacher, will have activities planned that focus on the season of autumn with its emphasis on harvest and giving thanks. Please let us know if your child will be attending the Fall Festival by completing the form below and returning it to school with your child.

P.E. News
The P.E. Team at Glen Grove is excited to move to our new Standards Based Progress Reports. Each trimester students will be assessed using the National Standards for Physical Education. Each trimester, all students will be assessed in their engagement, personal responsibility and the ability to throw overhand using proper form.
The student friendly definition of engagement that we have used with all students is a “high level of focus, attention and effort.” If a student demonstrates a high level of focus, attention and effort (engagement) all of the time the student would earn a “M” for meeting this standard on the progress report.
The student friendly definition of personal responsibility that we have used with all students is “the ability to stay positive and react appropriately.” If a student demonstrates the ability to stay positive and react appropriately (personal responsibility) all of the time the student would earn a “M” for meeting this standard on the progress report.
The overhand throw has five essential components for a mature pattern. The following components make up a mature throwing pattern;
Side to target (turn body)
Arm back and extended
Step with opposite foot
Rotate hips
Follow through across body
A third grade student is required to demonstrate three of these five components, a fourth grade student is required to have all five components, and a fifth grade student is required to have all five components using a variety of throwing objects. If a student is able to demonstrate the required components the student would earn a “M” for meeting this standard of the progress report.
In trimester 1 ONLY, students will be assessed on their ability to dribble a soccer ball with control. Control is defined as dribbling at a speed faster than a walk, using the sides or top of your foot, and keeping the ball no more than three feet away. A third grade student is required to dribble with control. A fourth grade student is required to dribble with control while increasing and decreasing speed. A fifth grade student is required to dribble with control during 1-on-1 practice tasks. If a student is able to demonstrate control for their grade level standard the student would earn a “M” for meeting this standard of the progress report.
In trimester 2 ONLY, students will be assessed on their ability to dribble a basketball with control. Dribbling with control has five essential components. The five essential components of dribbling with control are;
knees bent
opposite foot forward when dribbling in space
finger pads contact ball
ball is kept at waist or below
eyes and head up(not looking at the ball)
A third grade student is required to demonstrate three of these five components, a fourth grade student is required to have all five components and increase and decrease speed and a fifth grade student is required to have all five components during 1-on-1 practice tasks. If a student is able to demonstrate the required components the student would earn a “M” for meeting this standard of the progress report.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact any P.E. Teacher.

LRC News
The fourth annual event took place in the Glen Grove gym on the evening of October 11th. Hundreds of people celebrated literacy by participating in a variety of activities including making their own Zine (a paper booklet), building with K-Nex and Keva Planks, and using iPad technology to explore coding using Ozobots and Ozmos. Families had the opportunity to purchase books through Scholastic. Glen Grove students who attended were given a free raffle ticket and a coupon for a book (valued at $5.99 or less). We gave away 255 coupons! The highlight of the night was when Mrs. Funke announced the winners of over 30 raffle prizes! Special thanks to the book fair co-chairs: Julie Moon and Jen Crouse, and the parents, students, and teachers who volunteered to make the evening a great success!
Author Visit for 5th Grade
On October 23, the library will be hosting authors Liesl Shurtliff and Brianna Dumont as they share with the 5th graders their writing process, how they research, and how students can use these skills in their own school work and everyday lives. This visit is courtesy of the Book Stall, an independent bookstore in Winnetka.

Outdoor Recess Procedures
Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. In cold weather boots, mittens or gloves, warm jackets, snow pants, hats and scarves are a must. If your child wears boots to school, please remember to send in shoes for them to use during physical education. The wind chill factor must be ten or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. Please note that children must wear coats if temperatures are below 32°F.
We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess, generally because of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess, a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure.
