Hello RHK8 Families,
Our Carnival was so well attended last night and it was great students and families enjoying themselves! This week our highlights included Lap-a-thon assemblies, the middle school Back-to-School Night, and our Carnival of course. Thank you to everyone that helped make these events a success. Here's the News for this week.
BSD Communication About Lockouts
We received inquiries from parents about practices for communicating about lockouts following two instances of lockouts during the first week of school.
We encourage parents to watch our video outlining the difference between a “lockout” and a “lockdown.” A lockdown is called when there is a possible threat inside the school, while a lockout is called when there is a possible threat near the school or in the neighborhood.
The Beaverton School District does not typically send out parent notifications for lockouts for the following reasons:
- They are most often unrelated to what is happening inside the school.
- They are often due to police activity in the neighborhood.
- They are usually resolved quickly, often within minutes.
We always post a banner on our website when a lockout is in effect and is cleared. You can subscribe to our RSS feed so that you are always notified when a banner is placed on our website.
We do not typically send out notifications about lockouts via SchoolMessenger because the lockout will likely be resolved before the system is even finished sending out the notification. We do make exceptions to this practice if a lockout goes on for an extended period of time, or if it affects dismissal.
If a lockout happens during arrival, we work closely with our Transportation Department to hold or reroute buses as necessary, as well as with law enforcement agencies who provide support to ensure that students can be ushered into the school building safely.
Library News
We've had a great start to the year in library. Students are checking out books and it's common for kids to have 5 or more books out at a time. I subscribe to the Three Little Bears philosophy when students check out. Sometimes they will want a difficult book because they are interested in the subject, or they want to be like the "big kids." Sometimes they want an easy book because it's fun, and they want to relax. Much of the time they choose a book that is just right or close to just right. Kids may come home with a combination of all three types of books. That is fine with us. We want library to be fun and kids to foster a love of reading. We work hard to make sure library is a welcoming space.
Elementary students visit the library every six school days. Books are due every two weeks. Middle school students can visit during their media class, before school, and during school hours with a pass. Students can still checkout if they have overdue books, meaning if they forgot to return books that are due back to the library. We do put a pause on checking out if students have 10 late books. This helps everyone to manage their books. I send out email notices about once a month.
If you have late books from last year, please look for them. The district system set them to lost and a fee will appear on StudentVue. This isn't something I can stop. Please contact me to clean up lost books that show up on StudentVue, or if you have any questions.
Happy Reading,
Ms Moore
