Fourth Grade Science – Animal Studies
Students in fourth grade are getting first-hand experience with three very interesting animals. Both science classes have special visitors with them to complete the Animal Studies science module. The students are learning about Dwarf African Frogs, Fiddler Crabs, and Millipedes. They are studying their habitats as well as finding similarities and differences with the animals. It’s a great experience for the fourth graders since they get to study closely and learn about three very unique animals!
Veteran's Day Celebration
We Celebrate our Veteran's
On Friday, November 10, students in grades 6-12 gathered in the auditorium to recognize the service and sacrifice of our local veterans. With the help of the Vandergrift VFW Honor Guard, National Honor Society members provided a program that included the history of Veterans’ Day, musical selections from the Leechburg High School Band and Blue Notes, Leechburg’s select choir group, and the traditional Flag Folding Ceremony. This is the eighth year the program has been presented.
A video recognizing the family and friends of students and faculty who have served or who are currently serving in the Armed Forces was shown while the names of those who served were read. The Flag Folding Ceremony included the Vandergrift VFW Honor Guard folding the flag in its traditional triangle fold while the symbolism behind each fold was explained.
National Honor Society members also served dinner at the Marconi Lodge where veterans were invited to enjoy a free spaghetti dinner sponsored by members of the Marconi Lodge. This was the second year NHS members were given the opportunity to serve those who have served their country.
Go Noodle
The students in Mrs. Diani’s second grade enjoy a little “Guided Dancing” throughout the week. When it’s test day, the students unwind and participate in movement dance. The learners enjoy the songs and duplicate what they see on the touch screen. Go Noodle is a fun and relaxing tool used to break up the stress of test taking. Mrs. Diani has used Go Noodle for 2 years now. GOOOOO NOODLE!!!
Luminate Leechburg with Light-up Night
The teachers and students in 2nd and 3rd grade were “Guiding the Way” as little deers during the Luminate Leechburg Parade on November 25th. Everyone enjoyed marching down Market Street, which was filled with many familiar faces.
“There is no gift greater than friendship.” ALL ABOARD THE POLAR EXPRESS Kindergarten Luminate Leechburg Parade 2017
Kindergarten marched in the annual “Luminate Leechburg” Parade on Saturday, November 25th. Students wore their favorite PJ’s and boarded the Polar Express. The parade was a great community involvement event. Students enjoyed their time in the spotlight!
First grade lights up the streets in The Luminate Leechburg Parade 2017
First graders from David Leech Elementary celebrated Luminate Leechburg with classmates, parents, teachers, and the Leechburg community. Using the theme How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss, children dressed as Whos from Whosville and carried Grinch masks and quotes from the famous book. The first grade class took Best Group in the parade and won $100, which will be used for a pizza party and to purchase extra classroom books.
We Are Thankful!
The students in 2nd and 3rd grade made a cross-legged turkey and delivered them to Friendship Towers and Lee Haven Towers in Leechburg. The classes have decided to “give” something special to the community each month. For the month of November, the teachers delivered the cross legged turkeys. They were brought to the high rises on Tuesday, November 21. We were THANKFUL we were able to bring smiles to the residents during the holidays. December ideas are already in the works. HO HO HO!
OVR Award
On October 27, 2017, Michelle Ferretti, special education teacher, and Angela Vigna, paraprofessional, attended The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) National Disability Employment Awareness Month luncheon. The pair accepted the OVR Business Award in recognition of their partnership and belief in the potential of individuals with disabilities. Ferretti coordinated 16 work based learning/on the job placement opportunities with OVR during the 16-17 school year and is currently working to place additional students this year. Vigna accompanied her student to a 90 hour work based learning experience at CoCo Coffeehouse last year.
