A.I.G. Update for Teachers

Forest Hills Elementary School

Math Superstars

What is it?

The basic purpose of Math Superstars is to provide the extra challenge that self-motivated students need in mathematics. Participants will face challenging problems which require thinking! The program is not meant to replace any aspect of the school curriculum. It is an expectation that every classroom participate in this school-wide math enrichment program.

How does it work?

Participants should expect to receive one worksheet at the beginning of each week. They will have the rest of the week to think about the problems and come up with strategies for their solutions. Once a week they will attend a help session to discuss the most challenging problems for the week.

Who Can Participate?

Student participation in the program is always optional. It is offered as an enrichment opportunity for students who identify with challenges. Any student, regardless of prior academic performance, should be encouraged to participate as long as interest is maintained.

When does it start and what do I need to do?

The goal is to start the week of 9/16! (1st-5th grade)

* Kindergarten will start at a later time*

Jessica King (parent) has been working diligently to round up volunteers for each classroom to ensure the success of the Math Superstars program this year. Please contact the volunteer designated to your classroom and schedule a time when they can come in and work with your students. PTA has generously agreed to make copies for each classroom this year. Once you have identified the students that will participate, e-mail me how many you have participating so I can let PTA know how many copies you will need each week.

Nomination/Identification timeline

A timeline for student nomination/identification, with meeting dates and deadlines, is posted on my web site. While this information is particularly important for Match team members and 3rd grade teachers, ALL teachers need to examine the timeline closely.

Every school in NHC was given a testing window; ours is November 8th- November 22nd. This means that, unless an exceptional situation arises, I will only provide standardized testing ONE time this year. All nominations must be submitted to me by October 1st in order to be considered by the Match Team for testing. I will be communicating this with parents and I will be providing you with short informational "blurbs" to include in your newsletters, as well. Thank you in advance for helping me to alert ALL of our Forest Hills' families about this county-wide change!
