Hello from the principal's desk!

Volume 12, Issue 13

Feb 25, 2019

A quick one here, as I will be sending out a hard copy for March next week. Just wanted to highlight a couple of SUPER important things going on this week...

  • Golden Sneaker contest - started today, goes through March 8th. This program is from Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools, and tries to get families to come to school by walking, riding or carpooling. Every day teachers will ask kids how they got to school and how they plan to get home. We then find the classroom with the highest percentage of walking, riding or carpooling and give them the Golden Sneaker award! We do this activity for three reasons - 1. It is good for our bodies to get exercise, 2. It is safer when we reduce car congestion around our schools and 3. It is better for the world to have less greenhouse gases emitted by cars.
  • Title 1 Family Night - see the flyer below. We have our very own teachers giving lessons to families about how they can help their children! I hear this all the time from families, that they want extra help on Common Core. Tomorrow night is your chance! We have dinner and childcare provided for free, please brave the rain and come. We will go from 6:15 - 7:45, tomorrow night, Feb 26th. Meet in the MPR.
  • Cultural Voices - This annual tradition to celebrate Black History Month will be on Wednesday morning, Feb 27th, at 8:45 in the MPR. Every grade level has something prepared, and they will present up on stage over the hour. I can assure you it is great, and will also be crowded, so if you plan on coming, get a seat early.
  • Ruby's Got Talent - We have our annual showcase of talent this Friday night at 6:30 in the MPR. Come watch comedians, dancers, singers and musicians entertain the audience! Should be a great night!

See below for information about spring and summer camps - scholarships included!

#WeAreRubyStars - Jesse Woodward, Principal and loving it

Did you know?

Did you know that schools are funded through student attendance? When your child comes to school for any or all of a day, the school district receives around $45 per day, per child. If they are absent, for any reason, we don't get funded for that day. We have on average 30 students out per day, more on a Monday or a Friday. We are losing major funds from chronic absences. Please get your children to school!!!

Look below for the academic losses due to absences. More to come on this...

Alameda Soccer Club looking for players

Please check out Alameda Soccer Club - they are signing kids up for their Spring season. They let me know they have scholarships available for anyone who needs financial help to sign up. Please visit their website at www.alamedasoccer.org to sign up and request a scholarship! Let's get some Stars on those teams!

Social Media presence

We are going to really work hard to share all the wonderful things going on this year through our PTA Facebook page, PTA Instagram, and school Twitter. Please try and participate along with us! It is super fun when we can all enjoy the MANY positive events that happen here, even if we weren't there in person to see them!
