P-A-I-D-E-I-A ... Say What?

Paideia. So you may have heard this word being used by your student or your student’s teachers and have no clue what it means. Paideia itself is a rigorous active learning strategy. It engages students through thought-provoking academic conversations, growth of intellectual skills, and mastery of information grounded in a complex text. And Quail Hollow's teachers are diving DEEP into Paideia!

We have been working to integrate and push all of our QH students. Paideia and the type of teaching and learning it yields is a large part of the next phase of our literacy development in all subject areas. We have “soft launched” this approach with certain teachers that were trained and have already found the following to be true as promised by the Paideia Institute:

  • Students are more motivated to learn, because of the excitement of generating, articulating, and developing their own thoughts.
  • Students improve their writing by first developing ideas through conversation.
  • Test scores improve, because students are more interested in learning.
  • Schools meet Common Core Standards for reading, writing, and speaking and listening, through lesson plans that emphasize these skills.
  • All students get smarter because they are listening to different viewpoints, experiences, and perspectives from students with varying backgrounds.

What are students saying about Paideia?

  • Almost 90% of students surveyed said discussing their content topic through a Paideia seminar helped them understand the topic more.
  • 80% of students surveyed said that the written component following the seminar
  • helped them process the content better than before.

Here's what some of our students said when asked “What is one thing you liked about the seminar?”

Everybody is engaged in talking about the topic, and no one is left out! The whole class is having fun and they are all making friends with each other and i just love seeing that. Also, that you are not just speaking to the teacher when you have something to say, you are speaking to the whole class and the whole class is listening to what you said!!”

I find myself paying a lot more attention to the reading and class.”

“I liked that people would have to prove their point with text which is really fun to me. It is like we are in court and trying to prove something or lead to a conclusion.”

“I liked hearing people’s opinions and being able to share mine about the topic.”

I liked how there was no wrong or right answer and that there was no attacking someone’s view on the topic. We learned together.”

Stay tuned...there's more PAIDEIA coming soon at QHMS!
