Message from Brenda
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,
Welcome back! You will recall that on the last day of half term, our school community wore casual clothing and donated money to support the HK Community Chest charity. We raised a total of $13,150. Thank you so much for your generosity.
It’s Book Week time! ‘Languages Matter’
The children are very excited as Book Week officially starts today with lots of fun competitions and visits from authors to inspire children to read for pleasure and information. The authors will also share the ways they capture their audience through their writing. Thanks to the PTA for sponsoring the author visits.
Come along to the Book Character Dress Parade this Friday morning at 8.40 am. If you are in need of a good coffee to start your day, make your way to the PTA table where refreshments will be provided for parents.

PTA News
The Fair is coming!
The PTA Committee has already started planning for our annual School Fair on Friday 23rd November. This wonderful community event is a highlight of the school calendar, featuring performances by all year groups, delicious international cuisine, some great shopping with our external vendors and lots of fun games for the kids.
If you’re planning a clear out over the half-term holidays, remember that we will be collecting for our second-hand book stall and last year’s very popular ‘Spin and Win’ game will be returning. Start collecting jars and things to fill them, click here for inspiration and ideas! We will also be collecting new or nearly-new toys, games and puzzles in good condition – gently loved items only please. We will advise collection dates and times in the newsletter – watch this space!
The PTA also welcomes donation of new items – toys, shoes, clothing or accessories – to sell at the Fair. If you have contacts in import/export or know someone wanting to move quality samples, please get in touch with Becky by email to pta@glenealy.net.
Halloween Bake Sale
Year 3 will be hosting a Halloween themed Bake Sale on Friday 2nd November. More details to follow in next week's Newsletter.
Bingo Prizes
We still have a number of prizes that have not been claimed from the Bingo evening. Please contact Becky at pta@glenealy.net if you won a prize on the night and are yet to receive your tickets.
Box of Hope
The Box of Hope is an annual charity project aimed at providing useful/educational gifts to underprivileged children in Hong Kong & Asia. Many Hong Kong schools donate things to help these children to bring a big smile on their faces. What you have to do is fill a shoe box with some things and then wrap it with some colourful or nice paper.
Details of the items and how to pack the box can be found on a special label that the Events Team of Year 6 will give to each class on Thursday.
The drop off dates for the filled boxes are the 5th- 9th of November. The deadline will be on 9th November so make sure to remember! When you bring your Box Of Hope to school, please drop them off to either Mr. Sangster or Mr. Buckley’s office . Like they say, charity begins at home!
If you have more questions, go to the Box Of Hope website here or ask us. We can be found in the 6B & 6S classrooms.

Top Tech Tips
Books Vs. E-Books
With Mini Book week happening at Glenealy, it leads to the debate about whether books or e-books are better for young readers to engage with. As always with children and technology use, there is no simple answer. This article from The Independent explains both sides. The key advantage of a paper book seems to be the opportunity for bonding with family members and a reduced chance of being distracted as you read. However, there are suggestions that e-books can help reluctant readers become engaged whilst with older children who read independently, there is no real difference.
There are many e-book subscriptions that you can try, for example https://www.getepic.com/ which has a free 30 day trial for when you cannot get to the Glenealy School library
