Bi-monthly Parent Newsletter
November 2013
Dear Parents,
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to come and meet with me last week for our bi-monthly parent-teacher conference. I am so encouraged to have a wonderful group of parents who are enthusiastic and willing to be involved in challenging and improving the students’ learning. It was a pleasure meeting with you and I am so excited to work with you towards having an outstanding school year.
I am thrilled to update you on the new units we have started! In Science, we’ve finished learning about the butterflies and their life cycles and moved on to animals and their habitats. We are learning about different animals, some they already knew and some that are new to them, and learning about where they live. Carrying on the subject of habitats, we have started a new unit about “Our Country and State” in Social Studies. I’m sure you can tell by the homework that was assigned last week on coloring the country flag, we are learning about our country flag and we will learn about our state flag next.
In math,
we've finished our unit on the shapes. We are now going in to measuring and comparing lengths. We've been working on an activity to measure the heights of our classmates and also family members so if you could help your child measure you for this activity, it would be greatly appreciated!
Lastly, we have just started a new unit on learning uppercase and lowercase letters. This week we are only focusing on the first seven letters of the alphabet. This is the start of learning phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear and differentiate the various sounds that are heard. It can help improve reading and reading comprehension. Any help from our parent volunteers in prepping for the lesson’s materials are always appreciated!
I look forward to meeting with you again at our next parent-teacher conference and I hope you have a great rest of the week!
