Field Trip - Blue Springs School of Economics
5th Grade Field Trip
Our 5th-grade field trip is quickly approaching. We are scheduled to visit the Blue Springs School of Economics to take part in the International Bazaar where students become immigrants of another country and take on the role of working in the business on Friday, November 1st. The PTSA will be paying$10/student, but the total cost is $15/student. We are asking parents to please send the permission slip that was sent home this week and the additional $5 to help fund the field trip by Friday, October 4th. If you have financial difficulties, please contact your child’s teacher.
Parent Volunteers Needed
In order to make our International Bazaar field trip a success, we are in need of several volunteers. As a volunteer, you would be working right along with your student and will be required to attend a training session before we arrive. This means that you will have to drive yourself to The School of Economics in Blue Springs, MO, and be there by 8:45 the day of the field trip. Your student will be attending on Friday, November 1st. If you would like to volunteer, please fill out and return the bottom portion of the field trip permission slip that was sent home with your child this week by Friday, October 4th. Once we have collected all volunteers and assigned positions, additional information will be sent home. (If we have an excess of volunteers, we will have to do a drawing as there are limited spaces available).
Math
In math class we are now on Topic 2. Monday we took our Topic 2 pre-test. In topic 2 we will be learning:
-How to solve problems with mental math
-Rounding numbers to estimate the answer
-Use models to show sums and differences
-Add and subtract decimals to the hundreths
-Add and subtract decimals
ELA
In reading, we are wrapping up our unit on Point of View. We will be testing over this unit on Tuesday, October 1st. Students should know the differences between the first person, second person, third-person limited, and third-person omniscient. Students are also able to identify the perspective of the narrator and tell how it impacts the story.
For writing, we are practicing creating strong paragraphs, using a topic sentence, and many supporting details. Paragraph structure is very important to perfect to be able to advance in our larger writing pieces. The entire first quarter is focused on free writing and sharing.
AR goals have also been set and can be found in your child's planner. As homework each night, students should be reading for at least 30 minutes a night to help them work towards this goal.
Students are expected to meet their AR goal each quarter.
The end of first quarter is October 11th.
40 Book Challenge!
ALL students who participate, regardless of how many books they read, will be invited to our 40 Book Challenge celebration at the end of the year.
Students are really excited to get started with this challenge, and love to share about the books they are reading! Make sure you ask your child about their goals and ask them to share their reading as well!
If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Shoup.
Science and Social Studies
Science
We have been busy investigating properties of matter over the past week. We have reviewed the idea that matter can take on 3 common forms or states: solids, liquids, and gases. We have learned that some properties and characteristics are observable while some properties such as conductivity, magnetism, and solubility are testable and can be determined through tests and experiments. We have been investigating several of these testable properties through experiments and demonstrations in class. Next week, we will focus on measurable properties such as temperature, length, width, height, mass, weight, and volume. We will also begin to explore atoms, molecules, elements, and compounds and build models of these concepts.
Social Studies
We began our unit on the Regions of the United States with our first review quiz over Oceans and Continents. We will be taking quizzes over the states and capitals in each region while also exploring the geography, landforms, climate, culture, landmarks and attractions, natural resources, and products of each of the 5 regions of the United States. We will be testing over states and capitals in each region at least once a week over the next few weeks. The students will have a study guide to help them study and prepare for the quizzes. I also shared some websites with students in class that they can use at home to help them study their states and capitals for this unit. I am including the links to these sites below.
You Tube “Tour the States Official Music Video”

Sheppardsoftware.com USA games

During this unit, students will also have the opportunity to participate in our Geography Masters challenge with their states and capitals quizzes. Students who score 90% accuracy or higher on each quiz for each region including the Oceans and Continents quiz are eligible for the Geography Masters Celebration. Students will have 2 attempts at each quiz (original quiz and a retake if needed).
We had our 2nd quiz over the states and capitals of the Southwest on Friday, September 27. Our next quiz over the Western Region states and capitals will be Friday, October 4.
