SUMMER DRIVING LESSONS NEEDED??
The Driving Center is now registering for summer, fall and winter break classes. Driver Education classes include 30 hours of classroom instruction, along with six individual driving lessons. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certificate, which often reduces car insurance by as much as 25%. Courses are taught in a fun and engaging way here in Oak Ridge at 130 Bus Terminal Road. Visit www.thedrivingcenter.org for details or call 865-482-6700.
SENIORS - WORK ETHIC DISTINCTION
Seniors, do you have great work ethics? Do you want to have evidence of this to share with future colleges and employers?
If so, please download the application and place check marks in areas you believe give evidence you deserve this distinction.
Anyone who can attain at least 20 points on this application may deliver it at any time before April 7, 2023 to Dr. Holly Cross’ office at Oak Ridge High School – (CS244) or e-mail a completed form to: hcross@ortn.edu.
She will verify all elements that are recorded in Skyward.
- Students must present written verification of items that are not recorded in their Skyward accounts.
- The most often-asked question is about the drug-free standard and Tennessee Promise hours.
- These require written verification to earn the points and are purely voluntary.
Upon graduation, a signed, formal certificate will be provided for students who earn the distinction to present to future colleges and/or employers. Per our policy, students graduating with a district-developed work ethic distinction shall be recognized at their graduation ceremony. This distinction will be useful for presentation to future employers for work-based learning, apprenticeships, and employment in a chosen field after graduation. Employers throughout Tennessee have indicated that students who present a document such as this, indicating desirable work habits will be given preference for interviews. To earn such a distinction, students must exhibit certain characteristics by earning points on a Work Ethic Distinction form available via this link: www.ortn.edu/Curriculum/CCTE/Work_Ethic.pdf
SENIORS - INDUSTRY 4.0 DIPLOMA DISTINCTION
Essentially, students seeking this diploma distinction are going to be given the option to do a combination of dual enrollment and work-based learning as follows:
- Graduation requirements must allow the student to earn at least one science credit and one math credit through approved course substitutions which include dual enrollment and work-based learning aligned to the student's career path. Students are also required to earn nine credits of dual enrollment or work-based learning experiences that apply the students’ knowledge and skills. (More information below and attached).
- They are required to work with an approved career counselor, who, in our case, can be a school counselor and/or if they are enrolled in Work-Based Learning, would be our WBL-trained and certified teachers (these are Teresa Ledden, Bev Sparks, Sonya Minarik, Jessica Pointer, Mark Buckner, and Eric Mason in my department). I am also WBL certified and would be happy to assist as needed, and am prepared to send additional instructors to WBL training as needed as we increase demand in our WBL courses.
- TDOE wants to ensure students are learning the career success skills, which ARE the WBL standards (simplified version attached) that are embedded in every single CTE course in grades 5-12, and are also the standards on which the 5-12 CCTE teachers have committed to as our essential standards in our longitudinal graded 5-12 CCTE PLC.
- These are also (no coincidence) the course standards we use for student self-reflection on our end-of-term CCTE survey in high school and end-of-grade band in middle school.
- These standards are explicitly taught in our Work-Based Learning courses under the teachers named above. The course includes the creation of a student work portfolio, which is also an expectation when earning this distinction.

IDLING REDUCTION CAMPAIGN
The ORHS EAS Classes are launching an idling reduction campaign this week and would like you to know that:
**Idling is the act of leaving your car running while not moving. While this may seem harmless, it is causing air pollution that is especially harmful to children and the elderly. According to World Economic Forum and the National Library of Medicine, 1.2 million children and 3.2 million elderly die every year because of air pollution.
