Cardinal Code Focus for the Week
Please make sure to take time this week to reteach your expectations for inside recess. Invite your playground monitor to attend this time with you to help students understand that the two of you are a team working together to help them have fun while being safe and following the Cardinal Code!

Behavior Referrals
To help ensure that only major offenses are sent to the office, I copied the Davison Behavior Intervention Process graphic for everyone and placed them in your mailboxes to review. If an inappropriate behavior falls under the teacher managed list of infractions it is the expectation that you, the classroom teacher, manages that behavior. You will remember that the outside circle offers possible behavior interventions to use in these cases. Also, if you need additional ideas for behavior intervention you can visit PBIS.org for more suggestions.
If the inappropriate behavior falls under the staff managed list you can write a referral and put it in our Success Coordinator's mailbox. She will manage these referrals and will seek my help if needed.
Office managed referrals are major referrals and are listed in the box on the lower right side of the matrix. These referrals get written by the staff member that observed the offense or the adult that received the complaint. Please remember to complete the referral and send it to the office. I will follow up with the investigation once the referral is submitted. Major referrals are entered into Synergy. Once they are entered in Synergy you and I both get a copy back. This helps you know how the behavior was managed. If you have a question about any referral you can come see me.
If I receive a referral that is not a "major" referral I will return it to the staff member that needs to manage the behavior. I have asked Anne to make neon colored labels for me to stick on the top of referrals that I receive that are not major offenses. It will explain why it is being returned to you to manage. I double checked today and they have been ordered, but are not in yet. We will begin using them as soon as they come in.
A word on consequences from The Restorative Practices Handbook for Teachers,Disciplinarians, and Administrators by Costello, Wachtel, and Wachtel.
"Often our trainers are asked whether we think that having a student experience a consequence is important. The answer is yes, consequences are always appropriate, but consequences need to be differentiated from punishment...The significant difference is that with a punishment the student is passive, having neither power or responsibility. With a consequence, the student can be active, has both power and responsibility, and is put in a position where he will be likely to look at his behavior and reflect on how his behavior has impacted other people...Restorative methods impose a consequence rather than a punishment and help to create empathy and active involvement. A consequence dramatically improves the chances that positive attitudes and behaviors will be internalized and that young people will behave well, not merely out of fear, but because they want to feel good about themselves and have a positive connection with others."
Teachers, you will be receiving a copy of this excellent book on Restorative Practices as part of our School Improvement Plan. We are working out the details for how we will get our team through this excellent material. Stay tuned!
