Regional Mayco Clay Workshop
Escambia County Elementary Art teachers began the new year with a Mayco Clay workshop at Cordova Park Elementary. Clay,a great vehicle for creating lessons that tie in science and math skills that students will need for the FCAT, is one area that many elementary art teachers have asked for additional professional development. In the workshop teachers explored a variety of stamping and color techniques. Teachers learned many student-friendly methods including glazing experimentation and problem solving integration. Pictured below are the creature abodes made by elementary art teachers.
Pensacola Museum of Art field trips and student art show
Young artists all across the Escambia County area have been taking field trips to Pensacola Museum of Art to see the art work of our most talented artists in grades kindergarten through high school. Students have experienced a guided tour with a docent trained in using our ECSD art vocabulary. This field trip brings relevance to the the students by allowing students to make connections between the art curriculum and a real working museum. Nothing can replace a real world experience to fuse learning for our students as they explore the world of art.
Artel Mask Exhibition
Thanks to the initiative of N.B. Cook art educator Patti Wheeler, top art students across Escambia County got to experience what it is like to exhibit in a professional gallery. Artel Gallery hosted a two week art exhibit showcasing masks made out of every type of material imaginable from milk jugs to papier mache. Students had the option to put their art up for sale in the downtown gallery. A very nice reception was held for parents and art students to celebrate the art achievements of the clever mask makers around Pensacola. Suzanne Robert, Artel Gallery president, said she looks forward to this exhibit every year because the student artwork keeps getting better and better each year.
Focus On Art Educators
Pensacola Museum of Art is currently hosting an exhibit featuring current artwork by ECSD art educators. Pictured is a small selection of art featured in the show.
Lipscomb Art Educator One of Three Artists to Show at Artel Gallery
Artel Gallery is pleased to present Body of Work IV. This exhibition explores the works of three artists with a strong artistic vision: Linda Kernick, Sally Miller, and Gila Rayberg. Works in this exhibit were selected by jurors Michael Boles, Warren Thompson and Kreg Yingst.
Sally Miller is one of the art educators at Lipscomb Elementary. Her abstract paintings include a "chair" series (painted as a reflection of her dad's attic) and symbolic images from travels and events in her life.
The 15 paintings will be on exhibit from January 21 to February 28. The opening reception is January 31 from 6:00-8:00.

Accountable Talk in Art
ECSD art educators have been meeting at Brentwood Elementary in a series of workshops to implement Accountable Talk and student initiative into the art classrooms since November. In this series, art educators worked together to explore Charlotte Danielson's model of highly effective student engagement, using Common Core State Standards and eliciting curiousity.
