NEWS FROM THE CORRAL

December 11, 2015

Good Afternoon Pony Parents,

It's truly unbelievable this is my last newsletter for 2015. This semester has flown by and it's been such a joy to watch our students grow, mature, and increase in all areas academic and extra-curricular. You should be so proud of all their accomplishments as well as your direction and guidance as parents. GMS hallways are filled every day with compassionate students who want to make our community better!

Next week is difficult, especially for 6th graders who will experience finals for the first time. It takes a great deal of time management to prepare for more than one test a day. Making certain students get plenty of rest is critical as they power through this week. We all wish you and yours a Happy Holiday season and look forward to achieving greatness in 2016!

Have a blessed week,

Linda Young, Principal

Hour of Code

Computer Science Education Week and Hour of Code is a worldwide event that took place December 7-13. It’s a movement powered by Code.org dedicated to helping students learn the basics of computer programming. GMS had many classes participate during the week as we bring the career options of coding to the forefront of our student's minds.

Winter Band Concert

Tuesday evening GMS Band presented an outstanding mixture of holiday music. All bands were represented and the growth in their performance ability is amazing. Thank you to Mr. Williams and Ms. Fisher for hours of dedication and hard work to develop these young musicians.

STEM Exploratory Night

Wednesday evening GMS hosted our first STEM Exploratory Night. Parents and students spent the evening exploring areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and how they are critical pieces in our every day activities. The school was packed with families learning through their children. Thank you to all the families who joined us and made the evening a success.

Choir Students Give Back

Each person’s path in life is different, each journey unique. We can all be thrown off by life’s challenges and become sidetracked. But sometimes the challenges are simply too devastating to navigate alone and we need a hand up. That’s where The Gatehouse steps in – to help women and children in crisis discover their new path for permanent change.

As part of our choir fund raiser, students sold soap which they donated to Gateway House. Thursday Choir students delivered the soap which was well-received. It makes us proud when we see our students setting the example to help those in our community who need assistance. Thank you Mrs. Bothe and Choir Boosters for your work on this awesome project.

Excellence in Education

GCISD is starting a new monthly video series called Excellence in Education, which will give community members a look at district programs, finance, facilities and other initiatives. The first YouTube segments highlights school funding and the impact of the state’s Robin Hood finance system on GCISD. The video can be seen at the district’s YouTube Channel, GCISD TV.

Upcoming Excellence in Education segments will cover how each tax dollar is spent, debt service, facilities, learning environments, safety and security, and more.

The goal of the video series is further transparency between the district and parents, staff and others in the GCISD community.

Meet your Board of Trustees Jesse Rodriguez

Each month the district provides a spotlight on our Board of Trustees to allow us to get to know a little bit about each one. This month we showcase Jesse Rodriguez. Please follow the link to learn more about Trustee Rodriguez.

Student Attendance at After School Events

Once students enter into the gym for basketball we do not allow them to leave and re-enter. Safety of students is our first priority. We want you to feel comfortable leaving your child with us at these events knowing they are in the presence of school officials. Should your child go against our request and leave the activity you will need to pick them up immediately. We do not want students lingering in areas without supervision. Should you have questions, please let me know.

Yearbook Purchase

Remember yearbooks are available for purchase. You may go to

FIRST Committee

GCISD has formed a Facility Innovation and Readiness Stakeholder Team (FIRST) to study and prioritize ways to create the best possible learning environment for GCISD students.
