Upcoming Events
We hope you have an enjoyable weekend!
Sincerely,
Steve Zrike
The Holyoke Building Committee met last evening, November 13th, to discuss next steps related to our middle school proposal. We appreciate the many community members that attended to share their thoughts about the ballot question that failed to pass and offered ideas about how we should proceed as a community. A meeting is scheduled next week with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) who provides the construction reimbursement for new school building projects. At this meeting, we will discuss what options exist for our pursuit of improved middle school facilities in the Holyoke Public Schools.
Holyoke Public Schools awarded $185,000 by Barr Foundation
We are excited to share that HPS has been awarded a $185,000 grant from the Barr Foundation and is one of 10 Massachusetts school districts that has been selected to be part of its new Strengthening School Leadership Initiative.
The districts will be working together over the course of nine months to develop new, more effective approaches to school leadership. They will gain a better understanding of how to best improve the ongoing strategic management of their leadership pipeline, while receiving support, expertise, and learning from others’ experiences.
Other members of this cohort include:
Chelsea Public Schools in partnership with Malden Public Schools, Revere Public Schools, and Winthrop Public Schools
Gardner Public Schools in partnership with Fitchburg Public Schools, Leominster Public Schools, and Winchendon Public Schools
We’re thrilled to work with the Barr Foundation and partner with these districts to plan and build new ways to strengthen school leadership in Holyoke and across the state as part of this Initiative.
Cone of Excellence Awarded to Jessica Santana
This week’s Cone of Excellence Awardee is Jessica Santana. Jessica demonstrates excellence in her role as an instructional assistant. She is an integral part of the educational team who works with students one on one or in small groups to maximize learning. She builds amazing relationships with students in order to help meet their academic and social/emotional needs.
We will be recognizing at least one educator a week who is working hard to build and grow our students' ability to: effectively communicate, think critically, productively engage as community members and become mindful individuals (from our graduate profile). Recipients receive a construction cone that displays the words: “Awesome,” “Well Done,” and “Great Job” and an ice cream cone gift certificate, donated by Friendly’s, in recognition for their outstanding work.
Visit our website to learn more about this recognition and to view a listing of prior awardees.
High School News

Friday, December 13 – 7:30 PM
Saturday, December 14 – 1:30 PM Matinee

Purchase tickets and learn more about this show that will be directed by Bevan Brunelle.
- The madrigal students, directed by Mr. Mark Todd, shared their talents with residents of the Holyoke Soldiers Home last Friday during their Annual Veteran’s Day celebration. The fabulous madrigals always do an amazing job!
- Students in the Community & Global Studies Academy (CGS) toured the Hampden County Hall of Justice this week as invited guests of the District Attorney. They visited several court rooms while in session to observe arraignments and trials and had the opportunity to speak with a judge and other professionals to ask questions about law and criminal justice. We would like to thank District Attorney Anthony Gulluni and his Community Safety and Outreach Specialists Anthony Jennings and Gina Anselmo who are both for the DA's office for providing our students with this opportunity to gain firsthand experience and insight into the criminal justice system and all the professions within it.
- The work-based learning team organized a field trip for students interested in the sports and entertainment industry to the Springfield Thunderbirds Sports Symposium. The field trip took place yesterday at the MassMutual Center. Students enjoyed listening to top executives in the industry talk about their jobs. They learned about the process of how to get these types of jobs and that you don’t have to be a professional athlete to be in the industry. Students experienced a professional athletic event and learned how much detail and planning goes into it. They also had the opportunity to meet with other schools from Western Mass. There was even talk about having one of our own HHS students having an internship in broadcasting with the Springfield Thunderbirds.
The Unified Basketball team is hosting their final home game and senior day today at 3:30 pm. (Senior Day Recognition will begin at 3:45 pm.) This is their Fans-in-the-Stands Game — and they are hoping to fill the stands with support for the HPS Unified Team. We hope to see you there!
NEWS BRIEFS
- Metcalf School held a celebration last week to recognize their students of the month. We would like to congratulate these hard working students!
- Mrs. DiCarlo and Mrs. Giroux's third-grade students from McMahon School took a field trip to Amherst Cinema last week. They watched two short movies where they used their senses to predict what would happen. Both movies were written by students their age. After the movie, they worked in groups and created their own scenes to a movie. Each student participated by writing and reading their part and showing their picture. Stay tuned, as both classes will go to part two of this field trip in the Spring.
- The Transitions Academy is hosting a Holiday Fundraiser Dinner on Thursday, December 5th. Please see flyer for ticket information and more details.
UMass Hockey is hosting an Educator Appreciation Night on Friday, December 6th. They are offering discounted tickets in all seat locations for those who work in education and their families. You can purchase tickets ahead of time on their site, as well as read information about the game.
