SCIS Principal Newsletter
April 6, 2023
Hello Sloan Creek Families!
Happy Thursday! We have had an awesome week at Sloan Creek. We had a great time with our Leadership Lovejoy Community members on Tuesday. They all learned to sew just like our 6th grade art students and were also able to tour the building. They asked great questions and it was so fun to showcase what we are doing at Sloan Creek.
We've also had several orchestra students playing their solos for classes, teachers and the front office. The purpose for this was to help build their confidence as they prepare to perform their solos. I was super impressed with all of the students who played.
As you know, Denim and Diamonds was held this past weekend. While we are extremely grateful for the donations so far, we would like to be able to fulfill more of our teacher grants. Please see the grants below. We are forever grateful for the generosity of the community. We hope you find a grant that speaks to you so we can enhance the learning for our students at Sloan Creek.
I hope everyone has a great weekend with family and friends. Enjoy the extra day and I will see you all on Monday.
Lovejoy Proud,
Courtney Halpin

Attendance Information
Attendance continues to be a top priority for Lovejoy ISD. It should come as no surprise that attendance has a direct relationship with student learning. Additionally, public school funding is provided by the State of Texas based on each district's average daily attendance (ADA).
Lovejoy has developed an Attendance Task Force consisting of staff, parents, and students to formulate ideas about how to positively impact ADA in our district. One suggestion is to update the community via weekly principal communication on the number of absences each campus has accrued YTD along with the budgetary impact of those absences.

CATCH My Breath-6th Grade Students ONLY!

Please fill out the form to let us know if you would or would not like your child to participate in the "Catch My Breath" program during their scheduled PE class. Spinal Screening-5th Grade Girls ONLY!!!
Dear Parents/Guardians of 5th grade girls:
Our school will do spinal screenings April 10-14, 2023 during your student's PE class.
State law requires that schools must screen students for abnormal spinal curvature in accordance with the following schedule:
• Girls will be screened two times, once at age 10 (grade 5) and again at age 12 (grade 7).
• Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14 (grade 8).
Trained screeners will check your child for signs of spinal problems like scoliosis. Catching a spinal problem early can make the treatment much easier. Not treating spinal problems can lead to serious health problems. The screening is simple. Screeners will look at your child’s back while he or she stands and bends forward.
Important Recommendations:
• Students should bring shorts to school for the exam.
• Girls should wear a thin t-shirt or a sports bra or a two-piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt on exam day.
• If girls are wearing a sports bra or a two-piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt, it is recommended they remove their shirt for the screening.
• The girls will be screened separately and one at a time with 2 female screeners present.
The school will send you a letter if your child does NOT pass the screening. The letter will tell you how to follow up with a doctor. This screening is not a medical exam. Your child still needs to see a doctor for checkups.
If you do not wish to have your child screened for any reason, you must notify the nurse through email, no later than Friday, 4/7/2023 by 3:00pm.
Thank you for your cooperation.
