Caleb White Project - Take 2!

The Student Lighthouse Community Service Action team will be sponsoring a hat/gloves/scarf/sock/t-shirt drive running from November 13th through November 17th. We are asking for adult male items as another school is already collecting youth items. This project has been brought to us by a remarkable young man named Caleb White (www.calebwhiteproject.com). We partnered with him last year, and the students at Silver Springs did an outstanding job donating to his cause and helping people in need in the state of Michigan. Please consider picking up one of these items while you begin your holiday shopping. We are hoping that our Silver Springs Community can synergize to make this a successful project. As a reward, the top 3 classes that collect the most items at the end of the drive will receive a special surprise!

Educating the Whole Child

In alignment with Northville Public Schools goal of Re-Imagined Curriculum and Instruction, and in an effort to advance the practices and procedures of the District's Multi-Tiered System on Supports (MTSS) framework to increase student growth in academic proficiency and social-emotional well-being, all elementary schools are looking more proactively at the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of our students.

Students that may be identified as needing additional supports in the area of social-emotional well-being will have additional supports available through our MTSS team. Examples of additional supports might be a social skills group, check-in/check-out, a school mentor, etc. More information will be sent home from the MTSS team. We believe in educating and supporting the whole child. We look forward to working together with our families.

If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with your child's teacher or contact the MTSS team.

PTA Invest In Your Child

Box Office Goal - $16,000

Raising a Self, Not A Selfie - The Mighty Me Project

Presented by Cheryl Jones

Ever-increasing expectations and inescapable social media magnify the internal pressures that children experience every day. The development of self-awareness and emotional problem-solving skills are essential for children to successfully navigate their complex lives. Building these capacities in childhood enhances lifelong identify and the opportunity for optimal academic achievement.

Children count on their parents to help them interpret reality and develop perspectives. This happens best through comfortable and honest discussions about life experiences. The Mighty Me Project provides parents with a series of specific interations that are easily incorporated into daily life. These simple strategies strengthen the parent-child connection, expand self-awareness and create tools for emotional problem-solving.

Parent workshops are scheduled in conjunction with PTA meetings at each elementary school, with an open invitation for parents to attend the session of their choice. Follow Up Sessions (Part 2) will be scheduled in Winter/Spring 2018.

Please see the attached flyer for specific dates and times!

Supporting the The 7 Habits at home!

Habit 1 – Be Proactive – “I’m in Charge of Me”

What this means: Take charge of your own life. Make it happen. Don't wait for someone else to do it.

“I am responsible for me.”

“I do the right thing before I am asked.”

“I do the right thing even when no one is looking.”

“I do not blame others for my actions.”

How can I do this in my life?

1. If you do something wrong, say you are sorry before someone asks you to apologize.

2. When you get mad and want to say something, stop, think, and ask yourself-

Why am I getting so angry? Make a good choice in a good way.

Great Books for Habit #1- Be Proactive

  • The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds
  • Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst
  • Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
  • The Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper
  • Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman
  • Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun by Maria Dismondy
