Educator Newsletter
Greetings from the Brentwood Public Library!
We hope your school year is off to a great start. The Youth Services Department supports Brentwood students and families. Please contact us with any questions, comments, or ideas for collaboration.
Live Homework Help with Brainfuse
All Brentwood library card holders have access to live, one-on-one homework help with Brainfuse. Brainfuse is available everyday from 2PM through 11PM, inside the library or from home.
Here’s how to access:
1. Go to http://main.suffolk.ny.brainfuse.com/
2. Type in your BPL card number
Students can get help with math, science, reading/writing, social studies, and state standardized tests. The service includes practice tests, flashcards, and a writing lab to submit essays for constructive feedback. Tutors are available in both English and Spanish.
With advanced notice, a representative from the library would be happy to demonstrate Brainfuse to staff, students, or parents. Please let us know if you are interested in learning more about Brainfuse and we can schedule a demonstration.
This is a valuable service that we would love more students and parents to take advantage of. Attached is an informational flyer in English and Spanish to distribute to your students.
Invite the Library to Your Event
If staffing allows, a librarian is happy to bring promotional materials and giveaways, address parent groups, or participate in event activities. We may even be able to visit with our owl library mascot. Please give as much notice as possible.
Assignment Alert
We love to know what projects and topics your students are working on and researching. Keep us in the loop with an Assignment Alert.
This information allows us to:
- Be prepared for students' questions
- Know teacher requirements for the project (ex: books need to be 100+ pages)
- Make purchases to ensure that our collection covers the subject matter that will be in demand
Send an email with the subject Assignment Alert to mutset@brentwoodnylibrary.org
Tuesday Night Homework Help
The library does not provide or give recommendations for tutors; however, we do have homework help available on Tuesday nights.
From 6-8 PM on Tuesdays teen ROTC volunteers are available to work one-on-one with students on their homework or practice reading. No registration is required for this program. Details and dates about this program are included on the attached homework help flyer.
Community Service Opportunities
The library provides volunteer opportunities for kids and teens at the following programs:
- For kids 8-12, our Idea Squad meets monthly to work on service projects inside the library and for the community. Our next project will be creating autumn and Thanksgiving placemats that will be donated to Long Island Cares. No registration is required.
- Kids 8-12 can earn community service hours by reading and reviewing books on their reading level. Reviews will be displayed in the library. Students submit reviews online here: http://brentwoodchild.blogspot.com/p/childrens-book-reviews.html.
- Teens 13-18 can participate in our Teen Advisory Group.
