Richard Nixon
Nixon was the 37th president of the United States of America along with his Vice President Gerald Ford (1973-1974) from 1969-1974. He is still today the only president to resign from office after the Watergate scandal of the early 1970's.
Kent State University Shootings, Ohio, 1970
Young student protesters at Kent State University were shot on may 4th 1970. The National Guard, sent to try to control protesters, fired 67 rounds in a span of 13 seconds killing 4 and injuring 9 others. This protest was because of Nixon announcing how he needed more troops for Vietnam and his plan for invading Cambodia. Nixon's actions as president caused these issues and it defined how some Americans saw Nixon as their president.
New York Times v. US (Pentagon Papers) 1971
In 1971 controversial memos sent internally in the pentagon involving the Vietnam war was released to the public, exposing the real intentions of the pentagon of not taking troops out of Vietnam. This caused an uproar when it was published in the New York Times and caused the people of America to distrust Nixon
Watergate Break-in, 1972
Watergate was a hotel that the democratic party was using as their base for the upcoming election. Men broke into the hotel and tapped their phone wires, they were caught and it was traced back to Nixon.
Roe v. Wade, 1973
Roe v. Wade was a court case debating abortion in the united states, Nixon became a factor in this court case because it happened during his presidency. He wanted to "pack the court rooms" and bring attention to this court case. In conclusion the court case went in favor of abortion, allowing woman to make a choice to either have or not to have the baby.
US v. Nixon, 1974
Watergate had finally caught up with Nixon and the government started the process of investigating the issue. They decided to impeach Nixon, but before the people could throw Nixon out of office he resigned his position in office.
