College Day! May 3rd
College & Post Secondary Awareness Day* GenTX Decision Day
What is Generation TX?
What is Generation TX Decision Day?
HS Seniors have to make a difficult decision and are praised for it!
Why?
You may be wondering why....why we need to be apart of this as a Middle School.
#1. We need to!!
- -Think back to hearing Rev. Bobby Broyles speak about No Excuses University (he referenced it when talking about Amarillo ISD)
These students not only need to hear the word "college" they need to know what other options are out there for them. They need to have a plan, a goal, a future!
**It's never to early to think about the future**
#2. House Bill 18 says we HAVE TO!
"House Bill 18. In May 2015 the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 18 with overwhelming support, to bolster the college and career advising available to students in middle and high schools."- 8th Graders are given all this information (along with HB 5 requirements) and are required to choose an endorsement (plan) and register for ALL FOUR years of high school.
___Think of how much easier this would be if they were thinking about it BEFORE they get to 8th grade__
-->Through Tech Apps and FCS they are given college and career readiness advice and exposed to different options.<----
*As 8th graders some of these students do not know of any college by name or where they are located-
ex. They have heard of "Harvard" but have no idea what kind of school it is or where it is located. They reference them by what they have seen or heard on TV or Social Media.
"You can help by talking to students about their college choices, contributing to the “spirit” of the day or —perhaps most importantly — reaching out to students to encourage them to complete the enrollment process. Seek out those students who might traditionally be overlooked when it comes to college planning, and talk to them about their options for college. Be sure to ask students about their postsecondary education plans after high school as they board the bus, go through the lunch line, or walk into church, a store, or their classrooms!
We are building a college-going culture in Texas schools and GenTX Decision Day is one of the ways that we do this. Please join in!" -http://gentx.org/events/gentx-day/
