Wrangler Wrap Up
A Weekly Glimpse into Wally Watkins Elementary
January 12-16
NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, JANUARY 19!!
Attention 3rd grade parents!
3rd Grade Parents:
In the fall your child took the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) that measured reasoning and problem-solving skills in three different areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. The results of that test are attached along with an explanation of some important information. For those of you who would like to know more about the CogAT, as well as how the results are used for our district’s gifted and talented screening, please make plans to attend your school’s session below on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 in the Learning Center at the Education Service Center 951 S. Ballard Street, Wylie, Texas 75098. Please bring your child’s results with you to the meeting.
Parent's Love & Logic Opportunity
Join us on January 20th at 6:30 pm in the Media Center for a Love & Logic Presentation.
Parents want to enjoy their kids, have fun with them, and enjoy a less stressful family life.
A lot of conflicting philosophies have been presented over the last 30 years. Many of these sound good, but don't seem to do the job of helping children become respectful, responsible, and a joy to be around.
Many ideas, offered with the best of intentions, center around making sure that kids are comfortable and feeling good about themselves in order to have a good self-concept.However, we have discovered that self-confidence is achieved through struggle and achievement, not through someone telling you that you are number one. Self-confidence is not developed when kids are robbed of the opportunity to discover that they can indeed solve their own problems with caring adult guidance.
There is, however, an approach to raising kids that provides loving support from parents while at the same time expecting kids to be respectful and responsible.
This approach is known as Love and Logic, a philosophy founded by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D., and based on the experience of a combined total of over 75 years working with and raising kids.
Join Mrs. Roberts as she works through some basic fundamentals of the Love & Logic program!
New Literature Process in WISD
Following some of the public literature challenges in neighboring districts as well as a strong internal book challenge, the Literature Review Committee has developed and approved a new process for literature review.
Attached is a document that outlines the 4 “types” of novels that are read in Wylie and how those “types” are defined, approved, documented, and changed. On February 3rd, the WISD Literature Review Committee will host its first “open” meeting.
Anyone – parents, community members, administrators, teachers, etc. – are welcome to attend. Moving forward, the committee will have 2 open meetings per year in addition to their regularly scheduled meetings.

Wrangler Reflection Winners!
Mackenzie Robbins's Reflections entry, "Imagine If.....", and Max Robbins's Reflections entry, Good Guys and Bad Guys Get Along, have been advanced to state-level judging! This is a wonderful achievement as nearly 60,000 students participate in the program annually and less than 3% of those advance to Texas PTA.
We're proud of these two students, as well as all of Wranglers who participated in this years Reflections contest. High five to our excellent PTA for helping our students participate!
