The Brown School Buzz
October 13, 2022
Dear Brown School Families,
We are sailing into October with enthusiasm, excitement, and a sense of community at the Brown School! Teachers and parents alike have spent the last 6 weeks teaching routines, procedures, and expectations. Most importantly, teachers have been providing opportunities for students to connect and share with one another to become a thriving learning community. Thank you to all of the families who have made efforts to get your children back on track, into the school routine, at school on time each day. A strong learning day begins with arriving to school on time and ready to learn. Our teachers have been especially appreciative of your support in this area.
Curriculum, Instruction and Learning at Brown
Developing early literacy skills is critical for both Math and Reading success. There is substantial evidence and research regarding the impact strong early literacy skills has on developing math skills. Both literacy and math proficiency require decoding, comprehension and fluency skills. While THIS ARTICLE out of the University's South Florida's School of Education focuses a bit more on preschool literacy instruction, it applies to PK, K and first grade learning. The article gives a brief, but fairly comprehensive overview of our early childhood teachers' charge, and our charge as a District, to provide effective early literacy instruction and learning. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you would like more ideas about how to support your child's early literacy and math skills development at home.
Our Phenomenal Brown Staff
In our last newsletter, we introduced the Brown School Preschool Team, and in this edition we are introducing our Kindergarten Team. Our kindergarten educators work hard each day to help our students secure the critical foundation they need for math, literacy, social, emotional, and physical development. The skills these teachers introduce, reinforce and continually foster are essential for our children's development as successful learners.

Let's Stay Healthy Together!
We have seen a fair number of colds, allergies and other ailments this fall. I would ask that we all work together to keep one another healthy. If your child is not feeling well for any reason, we ask that you keep him/her home until s/he has been fever free for 24 hours and symptoms improve. If your child is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, we ask that s/he has a negative test (at-home tests are acceptable) before returning to school. Since no negative results are required to be submitted to the nurse for your student to return to school, we are depending on our families to partner with us to keep all of our students and staff members safe. Please consult with your school nurse if you have any questions. For more information on Covid-19 and protocols currently in place in the Marblehead Schools, CLICK HERE.
