If your student is interested in veterinary medicine or working with animals, and/or a career in information technology or geographic information systems, encourage them to click the link below to sign up for one or both of this week's sessions in our Speaker Series, offering Compass Academy students the opportunity to engage in conversations with people from a variety of careers.

  • Wednesday (1/26), 2:15-3:00 pm: Veterinarian, Dr. Sally Gilbertson (REGISTER HERE)

Students who register via the link above will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link. We are always looking for careers to highlight, so if you or someone you know may be interested in participating in our Speaker Series, please contact Sharon Stanley (sharon.stanley@d303.org).

DO YOU KNOW A STUDENT WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING COMPASS ACADEMY NEXT YEAR? INVITE THEM TO OUR OPEN HOUSE THIS TUESDAY!

All students entering grades 9-12 next year, even those who have already done their course selection, can still apply for Compass if they do so by 2/4.
Big picture

COMING SOON- COMPASS CARES, MONTHLY SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES ON WEDNESDAYS!

Because many students have expressed an interest in becoming more involved in the community, starting in February, Compass Academy students will have monthly opportunities for service learning on Wednesdays. Students will be surveyed about specific opportunities of interest this week during advisory, and then more information will be shared early next month. We are excited to help our students develop global citizenship and community connections through the Compass Cares program!

SAT PREP FOR JUNIORS

To help prepare junior students for the SAT in April, we are offering them the opportunity to work on Khan Academy during the school day. Khan Academy has outstanding SAT preparation tutorials that use students' strengths and areas for improvement, based on the PSAT they took in the fall, to prescribe an individualized practice plan for each student. In a survey of nearly 250,000 test-takers, students who utilized Khan Academy for 20 hours had an average score gain of 115 (Composite, English + Math) points between the PSAT and SAT.

This practice will take place during flex time twice a week and will be supervised by one of our staff members. Students will be scheduled into the course and must meet attendance expectations. For completing the program, students will receive a mark of MTC and 0.25 credit as an Independent Study on their transcript. This will count towards the credits necessary for graduation.

All juniors are eligible to participate. To register, complete this form and the course will be added to your student's schedule.

COURSE REQUEST PROCESS FOR COMPASS ACADEMY, 2022-23

Many Compass students have asked about course requests and how they should approach this process for next school year. Students who are interested in taking elective courses at East or North High School should have indicated that interest in HAC. If they missed the deadline for course requests, they will be able to make those requests with Ms. Ohlson when they meet with her at the end of the month. This Thursday, the course offerings for next year will be visible on the Compass Academy website. Students will also have the opportunity to review these options during advisory this week.

High school students' course selections are not finalized until they meet with their counselor, which will occur during the week of 1/31-2/4 for Compass Academy students when they meet with Ms. Ohlson. Schedules are built after that process is completed for all high school students. This means that all students who attend their scheduling meeting with their counselor will have the opportunity to be placed in their requested courses for 2022-23 at East or North and Compass Academy.

EXTENDED STUDY OPTION FOR BLOCKS C & D

Students who have not met competency in a course have been assigned to work with the teacher of that course during flex time. Attendance will be taken and parents will be notified if students are failing to take advantage of this academic intervention. In addition, the extended study option for students will begin during Block C (2:30-3:45 pm on all school days but Wed.) or Block D (4:15-6:45 pm, Tues. & Thurs.) this week. Our goal is for every student to demonstrate competency in every course, regardless of the time needed to meet that goal, and we want to encourage students who are interested in demonstrating advanced competency to pursue that option as well.

If you would like to register your student for extended study this quarter, please complete this form. District transportation will be provided for students who need it, but it may take a few days to get students added to routes, so if your student will need a bus after Block C extended study, please wait until being notified by me that transportation has been arranged before having your student stay.
