Rise Up

PPA's Weekly Newsletter - August 17, 2022

Greetings PPA Students and Families,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year!!!!

We are getting closer to the beginning of the school year, where we will enter a new learning space with educators that honor a student centered learning environment. These educators are excited to build a “Culture of Care” within our building, as we continue to uplift positive relationships as the main strategy of success for students at PPA.

Students and families will have an opportunity to tour the building on Sunday, August 28th at 1:30 during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Students will be able to spend some time in the new building , while getting to know the staff, during Keys to Success on Monday, August 29th, 8:00 am to 11:00 am. If you missed registration for Keys to Success, reach out to Ms. Kathy at 608 -834- 6903, to register for this event.

As a district all schools have new start and end times. As you can see we start and end later than the past year. As a reminder, we are still a closed campus district in reference to lunch time. Take time to review the new bell schedule that will appear on the website in the near future.

Staff Spotlight!

My name is Erin Long and I am the new social worker at PPA. I can't wait to get to know all of the students, families, and staff here! I have lived in Madison for the past 5 years and recently graduated from UW-Madison. I have experience working at La Follette High School and a community center in Madison, and I am looking forward to learning more about the Sun Prairie community. So far, this has included lots of visits to Beans and Cream Coffee. In my free time, I love trying new restaurants, biking, reading (mostly Stephen King books), hiking, kayaking/being on the lake, doing yoga, shopping, and spending time with my family. I am so excited for this school year!! Please say hello if you see me around, I'm planning to check out Corn Fest!

Hi, everyone! My name is Ms. Nina. I am so excited to be your JAG Career Specialist this year! My educational background is in English (B.S.), and Gender Studies with a focus in Education Policy (M.A). My professional background is in community centers and nonprofits with students of all ages. In the classroom, I focus on Social/Emotional Learning, collaboration between education entities, and fostering a creative spirit. I love the outdoors, cooking, reading, crafting, and animals. This year I'm bringing excitement to be in the classroom, field trips, and lots of cool opportunities for our students!

I can't wait to share more about what JAG is with staff, students, and parents. Happy August, everyone!

Amy Clements, Instructional Coach with Prairie Phoenix Academy & Central Heights Middle School

Before I came to Sun Prairie, I spent over 20 years in Madison public schools. There, I served in many roles across grades 3-12, including as an art teacher, special education teacher, math teacher leader and instructional coach.

In my free time I enjoy gardening, camping, playing games, riding my bike, and relaxing in my yard with my 2 small dogs, Buddy & Charlie. By the time this goes to press we may have adopted another dog, Jojo, who is the chihuahua I found running along County Hwy CV on my way to school this summer. He had run away from his house and I am currently working with the humane society to adopt him and bring him into the fold – fingers crossed!

My partner and I have an eleven year old, Theo, who will begin 6th grade at Sherman Middle School this Fall.

As an Instructional Coach, I can serve as a thought partner, collaborator, or anything else that supports your very important work here. I very much look forward to becoming part of the fabric of the PPA community.

Additional information for the start of the school year

Where can I get information about school supplies?

At PPA we do not have a supply list. Students are more than welcome to bring and use their own supplies, other than that we provide supplies.

What about chromebooks?

All students that kept chromebooks should have them, students that turned in chromebooks will receive one, and students that lost chromebooks will have a meeting with the principal.

When will we find transportation information and receive bus tags?

Transportation information will be posted by our District Support Center in Infinite Campus and as soon as we know that date, we will share it with you. Bus tags will be passed out on the first day of school so that students can attach them directly to their backpacks. Students will ABSOLUTELY be able to ride the bus to school on the first day of school without a bus pass, as long as the student qualifies for transportation to PPA.

When are school pictures?

Pictures will be taken during the school day on Friday, September 23, 2022. Ordering information will be sent as soon as we have that for you.

Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Resources

We want to share resources that were provided by the district in an email to parents/caregivers last week on July 27th. Please take a moment to review this information one more time as we work as a community to destigmatize talking about mental health and suicide prevention. Please remember you are not alone in supporting your child/children and they are not alone. We have student support staff available yet this summer and as we start the school year to support your student, please don't hesitate to reach out and we will get them connected.

Subs and Crossing Guards needed!

As we prepare to start the year we are in need of awesome subs to help take care of our students when staff are out. Are you looking for a new opportunity? Do you know someone looking? Can you help spread the word? Please help us get the word out so that we can ensure that our students have the very best people supporting them even on days staff (teachers or support staff) need to be out. Having an ample supply of fantastic subs is also a great way to support our staff by allowing them peace of mind when they are out. Contact mtiseli@sunprairieschools.org with any interest/questions or contacts.

Athletic and Activities Calendar

We are so excited as our athletes have begun to take our fields! Before we know it they will be on the pitch, in the pool, on the stage and on the court as well. Please bookmark our 2022-2023 Athletic and Activities Calendar to mark your personal calendars for exciting upcoming events for the year.

2022-2023 Student Handbook

As we launch this school year with 3 High Schools in Sun Prairie (Sun Prairie East, Sun Prairie West and Prairie Phoenix Academy) we are united in our high expectations and high levels of support for students. Please grab a cup of coffee, refill your water or your favorite beverage and carefully read through our Student Handbook. This includes LOTS of important information from academics to student/parent/caregiver support to school nutrition and student fees.

The safety of our students, parents/caregivers, staff and community is our top priority. Please see our attached annual asbestos report.

Ongoing Communication

We will continue to provide communications on Wednesdays, as more information becomes available. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us by email.

We appreciate your time in reading through this information. We will keep you updated on a weekly basis. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or celebrations. We are here to support you, your scholar and their academic journey.

Be well,
