Summary
In the book, Jack and Stephanie get stuck on the road and when they go to find a place to call for help, they find an old house. When they go inside they find another couple there too. The other couple are Randy and Leslie. As the group band together to find something of use, they find an old lady making food in the kitchen. Betty, the old lady, tells them to help her get ready and when the food is ready, Betty calls Stewart and Pete to the table. During the meal, they start to her noises and think it is White. The group go and lock all the doors and windows. Then they hear White on the roof. He drops a tin soup can down the chimney. On the can is written, Welcome to my house. House Rules. 1. God came to my house and I killed him. 2. I will kill anyone who comes to my house like I killed God. 3. Give me one dead body and I might let Rule #2 slide. You have until dawn. Randy gets a shotgun and tries to shoot the lock off the door but then someone drives a car into the front of the house. This blocks off all the exits. Stewart makes Jack, Stephanie, Randy and Leslie to the meat locker and threatens them. They escape and Stephanie and Leslie run out into the hall and Jack and Randy head toward the basement. In the basement they get split up and Jack finds a little girl named Susan. Susan tells Jack she knows the way out. As they try to find a way out, they meet up with Randy, Leslie and Stephanie. Together they try to find a way out of the basement and the house but they keep running into problems along the way. As they make their way through the house they learn more about the house and White from Susan. She tells them all they need to know about the house and what it does to you. throughout the book they get more and more encounters with White until he has them trapped in a room. during this event they find out who White really is. He is the cop that told Jack and Stephanie to go down the road that spiked their tires. White leaves them to try and get out of the house and Susan leads the way. They end up in a room filled with Jacks and White. White gets angry and shoots Susan. As Susan bleeds out Jack and Stephanie see Susan's blood crackle with white light. They finally figure out that she is the light in this darkness and they figure out how to defeat White and the house.

The black smoke was a reoccurring symbol because it was an element of White's game.

The author's writing style was to write from the point-of-view of all the characters.

I would recommend this book if you like the mystery effect of the story.
