UOI 6: Who We Are
An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
Central Idea
Human needs and customs shape the way people live their lives.

What Will We Learn this Unit?
Math: During this UOI, students have been working to complete Module 6: Place Value, Comparison, and Addition and Subtraction to 100. Please click on the links below to see the strategies that are being used in the classroom so that you can reinforce them at home. Students have also been working on standards from Modules 3 and 5 independently through zearn.com activities and workbooks. Please continue to encourage students to complete zearn.com activities at home to support their development.
Objectives:
- Solve compare with difference unknown problem types.
- Solve compare with bigger or smaller unknown problem types.
- Use the place value chart to record and name tens and ones within a two-digit number up to 100.
- Write and interpret two-digit numbers to 100 as addition sentences that combine tens and ones.
- Identify 10 more, 10 less, 1 more, and 1 less than a two-digit number within 100.
- Use the symbols >, =, and < to compare quantities and numerals to 100.
- Count and write numbers to 120. Use Hide Zero cards to relate numbers 0 to 20 to 100 to 120.
- Count to 120 in unit form using only tens and ones. Represent numbers to 120 as tens and ones on the place value chart.
- Represent up to 120 objects with a written numeral
- Add and subtract multiples of 10 from multiples of 10 to 100, including dimes.
- Add a multiple of 10 to any two-digit number within 100.
- Add a pair of two-digit numbers when the ones digits have a sum less than or equal to 10.
- Add a pair of two-digit numbers when the ones digits have a sum greater than 10 using decomposition.
- Add a pair of two-digit numbers when the ones digits have a sum greater than 10 with drawing. Record the total below.
- Add a pair of two-digit numbers when the ones digits have a sum greater than 10 with drawing. Record the new ten below.
ELA: During this UOI, students have been exploring the central idea and lines of inquiry through reading leveled passages, writing, and hands-on activities. This unit required some parent participation since some students were not entirely aware of their cultural traditions and their family customs. Science/Social Studies: During this UOI, students have explored science through the distinction between needs and wants in life. Students have explored social studies standards by looking at the role of family customs in our lives, how families share cultural traditions and through interaction with our final field trip to Heifer Global Village in Sharpsburg, MD.
Social Studies Standards:
- Observe and describe ways people in their school and community meet human needs for food, clothing, shelter, and other commonalities, such as recreation, music, and stories
- Discuss and respect traditions and customs of families in the community
- Identify how families choose to share and borrow traditions from other cultures
Field Trip Highlights: Students explored Heifer Global Village stopping at several destinations that are served by Heifer International like:
- Mozambique
- Thailand
- Kenya
- Guatemala
- Appalachian Mountains, USA
- Refugee Camp
- Tibet
Ramadan Integration: 1st Grade is in the Ramadan Spirit Alhamdulillah! Students have been working to complete one good deed per day this blessed month. Students are able to earn points towards their Houses for each good deed they complete. At the end of the month, students will earn a prize for their dedication In shaa Allah. Below is the list of deeds students have been working on. You can also see them posted outside the 1st Grade classroom!
- Sight the moon to mark the beginning of the month of Ramadan!
- Pray all your salah on time.
- Help set the table for iftaar.
- Bake Ramadan cookies for your neighbors.
- Donate $1 to a masjid of your choice.
- Help your parents by collecting all the trash around the house.
- Teach your younger sibling or friend a surah you know.
- Donate some of your old toys or clothes to charity.
- Smile at everyone you see today!
- Make a card or write a note to tell someone you love and appreciate them.
- Go one day without complaining.
- Pray salah in the masjid.
- Give the full salaams! “Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh”
- Make a special dua for someone.
- Invite a friend to the masjid to pray with you.
- Teach someone something new!
- Collect any trash in your yard to keep the Earth Allah created clean!
- Learn 5 new names of Allah.
- Use the new names of Allah you learned to make dua.
- Give someone a compliment.
- Let someone go ahead of you in a line.
- Read a story to your younger sibling or younger friend.
- Stay awake after fajr to make extra dhikr.
- Spend extra time with your parents.
- Help clean up the masjid after iftaar or tarawih.
- Call your grandparents to tell them how much you love them.
- Help your parents with the laundry.
- Give a gift to a loved one.
- Make Eid cards for friends and family.
- Wrap an Eid gift for a friend or family member.

UOI 6 Who We Are
ARABIC
Students are earning how to conjugate verbs and pronouns in the past tense.
Students are using three vocabulary words to practice with. Students have also been working on their reading skills by reading a few pages aloud to the class each morning.

- To go ذهب Dha-ha-ba
QURAN
Students are very close to finishing Surah Al-Balad. Students have been working on the memorization of this Surah in groups, partners, and independently.
Islamic Studies
Students have been working on retaining the knowledge that they have learned throughout the year.

Art
Joan Miro Surrealism Art
They also tried to understand the ideas conveyed in the artwork and presented their own perspective.
They observed how students came up with different interpretations and that art can be read in different ways depending on one's perspective.
Then they created a step by step Miro inspired drawing on a large mixed media paper, They learned about proportion and balanced use of the space, they drew stylised and surrealistic human and animal forms, overlapping shapes and many types of lines.
Then finally they used acrylics to paint their artwork, while noticing the use of primary and secondary colors.
