News to Know!

January 29, 2016

February is here already. It's unbelievable how quickly the time goes. Enjoy the forecasted snow!

Progress Reports Home this Wednesday

Second trimester progress reports will go home this Wednesday. While academic progress is very important, please also pay special attention to the citizenship/behavior/organization sections of the progress reports. Elementary school is the time when good habits are formed. Throughout my years of teaching, I have found that having good study and behavior habits positively impact students' grades. As always, if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

What We are Learning this Week

As we continue learning about fractions in Math, our focus will turn to converting fractions to decimals and percents. We will also be using and interpreting information from bar and circle graphs. I anticipate that our Unit 5 test will take place some time next week.

In Writing, we will be starting our memoirs unit. Throughout this unit, the students will be generating ideas about their lives and finding depth in the moments they choose. Thank you in advance for the support and guidance you give your child as they go through the writing process.

We are finishing up Reading Unit 2 in ELA. We will finish out this unit by using the book Exploring Space. We will study and discuss the book's text structures to help us better understand the book. On another day, we will work on determining authors' points of view. We will finish out the week by reflecting on our reading goals for January.

Activities in Math Extension this week will focus mainly on reinforcing the concepts we have learned in Math class through the playing of fraction games. Having an extra 30 minutes of Math each day has allowed all our 5th graders to get extra practice in math concepts and has proven very beneficial.

Toilet Paper Rolls Needed

Mrs. Hoffman is in need of empty toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls for Science. If you have any that you can contribute, please send them with your child to school by Friday of this week. Thanks!
