A message from the Principal - Mrs. Bookman
To our Suffield Family,
At thanksgiving time we always talk about those things which we are thankful for and I could not go this week without letting you know how thankful I am to have such wonderful children, families, and staff to work with each day. Suffield is an amazing place! I couldn't be more thankful to have the opportunity to lead this school.
Do you often wonder what your child does at school? Do you ask why your child is learning in ways that you're not familiar with? Do you just want to know more about how to help your child in school? Well...On December 8th we are hosting a Curriculum Night! This has been designed specifically to address those questions. Teachers have developed short sessions and parents will have the opportunity to come to school, sit with other parents, and experience some of the things we do here at school. When we return from Thanksgiving Break, a flyer will be sent home so you can see what will be offered. So in the meantime, please SAVE THE DATE!! December 8th from 5:00-6:30!!
I hope you find time to enjoy the company of your family and friends throughout the weekend. From all of us at Suffield Elementary, we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Enjoy the weekend,
Mrs. Bookman
PRINCIPAL'S GOOD NEWS CALL
Congratulations to Sofia and Annie for receiving a good news call from Mrs. Bookman! Keep up the good work!
Congratulations!
Congratulations to our Girls on the Run team for completing their end of the season 5K recently. That means they ran 3.1 miles after training twice a week after school for the last 10 weeks. They should be so proud of themselves!
Let's Celebrate You!
Students can ask their teacher or the office staff for a red Celebration Slip. Students can share what they have to celebrate by filling out the slip and turning it into the Celebration Box in the office. Mrs. Bookman will choose a few "Celebrations" to share at our Celebration Assemblies that we have quarterly. Examples could be, meeting a goal (inside or outside of school), a sports team or club celebration, helping/volunteering in the community, or learning something new! We want to celebrate you!
Thankful Giving!
Update: as of Wednesday, 11/16. Mrs. Behren’s and Mrs. Taylor's class are tied for the lead!
The month of November will be PTA’s Membership Drive challenge. The classroom that has signed up the most PTA memberships by the end of November will receive a class party! Each classroom will receive a “PTA turkey” for their classroom that will earn its “feathers” for every membership. PTA Membership is $6. You do not have to be an active volunteer to sign up to be a member. Parents, grandparents and other family and friends are welcome to be a part of the Suffield PTA. For more information about what it is to be a part of the Suffield PTA or to sign up, please go to https://sites.google.com/view/suffieldpta/membership. We are thankful for all of our members!
Santa Shop
Santa Shop will be back for the 2022 Holiday Season. The Santa Shop will be the week of December 12th. Students will have a designated time to shop with their classmates for gifts for family and friends. Prices will range from 25 cents to $5 per item. A Santa Shop Form will be sent home for parents to fill out prior to the student's assigned day for shopping.
We need volunteers to help us run the shop! The signup genius link below, you will find the dates and times slots we need volunteers. The classes are listed with the time slots so that you may volunteer for your student's time to shop. We are also in need of volunteers to help set up and clean up. Volunteers, with help of the Santa Shop Form, will help students pick out items for the people listed on their form with amounts designated by parents. Slots to volunteer go fast, so make sure to grab one if you want one!

Outdoor Recess
Temperatures are starting to drop and we would like to pass along some details about recess, so you can plan accordingly. We will go out to recess if the temperature is above 20 degrees. We would like to remind parents that there are certain areas on the playground where snow boots are required and other areas where snow pants and boots are required during the winter months. If they do not wear the proper attire for these areas, they will have to stay on the blacktop area. Thank you in advance for your help.
Dog License
It’s that time of year to purchase a license for your dog. Applications for a new license may be picked up at Suffield Elementary. If you already have a dog license, you probably received your renewal notice mailed to your home. Your completed new application or renewal, along with payment, may be dropped off at our school. Licenses are $15 per dog until January 31, 2023. After that, under state law, the cost will go to $30 per dog. Please make checks payable to Portage County Dog Warden.

Birthday Treats
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently came out with guidelines and a list of healthy foods that schools are being asked to serve in place of cookies, candy, and other less healthy foods. Schools are encouraged to follow these guidelines, not only with food being sold but with any food being brought into the school. You are strongly encouraged to send in healthy snacks for birthday treats and/or holiday parties when requested.
At this time, we will allow Birthday Treats to be brought to school. We are required to inform you of the Healthy Eating Guidelines (see below) and suggest that you use this when selecting a treat. Whatever you choose, please note that all treats brought to school for the purpose of sharing with others, need to be prepackaged so we are able to know and see the ingredients list. There are many students who have a variety of food allergies and having the ingredients listed helps the school nurse determine if a student with allergies can eat a particular treat.
Student Medications
If you have medications that you need to have at school for your child, DO NOT send them to school with your child on the bus. Please bring them to school. The office is open from 8:00 am-4:00 pm. Please call the school if you have questions.
Counselor's Corner - A Note From Miss Livers
Helping Children Cope with Emotions
Children can feel the same strong emotions as adults. These emotions may present differently in a child than they would in an adult. Feelings come and go but when children experience strong feelings of anxiety, anger, fear, or sadness they may need help coping with these feelings. Below are some strategies to help support your child when they are experiencing strong emotions. Recognizing and identifying emotions will be the counseling lesson theme for the month of October.
• Teaching children to name the feelings with feelings posters/cards, and reading different books about emotions can help your child identify and articulate what they are feeling.
Try some of these kid-friendly books that may touch on the issues you see your child struggling with:
Books about identifying and experiencing different emotions for children
1. The Color Monster by Anna Llenas
2. The Way I Feel by Janan Cain
3. A Little SPOT of Emotion 8 Book Box Set (Books 1-8: Anger, Anxiety, Peaceful, Happiness, Sadness, Confidence, Love, & Scribble Emotion by Diane Alber
4. What To Do When You Worry Too Much by Don Huebner & Bonnie Mathews
5. The Hog Mollies and the Visit with Victoria by The 2nd and 7 foundation
6. The Invisible String by Patrice Karst & Geoff Stevenson
7. Even Superheroes Have Bad Days by Shelly Becker
8. Hey Jack Series: The Worry Monsters- by Sally Rippin
9. Wilma Jean the Worry Machine by Julia Cook
* Many of these books have a read-aloud available to watch/listen to on YouTube for free!
• Acknowledge and normalize your child's feelings. Acknowledging your child’s feelings can be simply stating something like, “I can see that you are crying and upset right now.” Explain to your child that everyone experiences different feelings and we all have to learn to manage them.
• Provide a calming area/calming tools at home. A calming area is simply a designated area where your child can take a break and reset. A calming kit can include items of comfort to help your child when they are feeling upset. This kit could include calming items such as; coloring supplies, play dough, stress balls, stuffed animals, fidgets, etc. Keeping your calming tools together in a place easy to access takes away the hassle of trying to locate them when they are needed most.
Substitutes Needed
Field Local Schools will be hiring for classified substitute positions in the following areas for the 2022-23 school year: Playground Monitor, Educational Aide, Cafeteria Worker, Secretarial, Custodial, Bus Aide, and Bus Drivers. You may print off the application ahead of time and bring with you to apply in the Superintendent’s Office located at Field High School, door #5.
