Modern Dance
History of Modern Dance
Modern dance was started when Isadora Duncan started to do something she called "free dance". She was soon recognized in good and bad ways for her new style of danceing. Soon, two others, Loie Fuller and Ruth St. Denis, started to do similar things, but with more shape.
Isadora Duncan
developed an approach to dance that emphasized naturalistic movement
Loie Fuller
had a school and a company beginning in 1908, where she taught natural movement and improvisational techniques.
Ruth St. Denis
spent the 1890s as a vaudeville dancer and a member of David Belasco's theatre company.
Where/When
Modern dancing was started in the United States and Germany in the early 20th century.
Showtunes Dance
History of Showtunes Dance
Dances and plays have been put together since the ancient Greeks. Broadway was not around until the early 1900's, though. Broadway musicals are made when the music and dancing makes up a storyline.
George Balanchine
One of the first choreographers of Broadway show tunes.
Anna Pavlova
She brought a more traditional feel to classical ballet. She was born in St. Petersburg in 188.
Mikhail Nikolaevitch Baryshnikov
Known as the best living male ballet dancer.
Where/When
Broadway dancing was started in the early 1900's, in New York City.
