English EOC/ STAAR Tests Coming Soon
Suggested Plan for Taking the EOC
You may take the English I STAAR test in whatever “order” you want. You are allowed to use a dictionary/ thesaurus on any part of the test. USE IT!!
Suggested plan for test day:
Start with planning the essay. Write your thesis statement. Plan/ outline/ rough draft. DO NOT WRITE ON THE ANSWER DOCUMENT YET!
Complete revising and editing section: Use your dictionary!
Return to essay plan – read and revise – write out your final drafts in the answer document.
Now complete the reading portion of the test. Skim through the multiple choice questions and read the short answer questions BEFORE you start reading. Take notes and highlight/underline the reading sections to help you focus. Look up any words you don’t know.
Once you have finished all sections, return to your essays to proofread.
Before the test, all you need to do is:
Get a good night’s sleep
EAT BREAKFAST- it is FREE in the cafeteria!
Dress in layers so you won’t think about being hot or cold
Bring a pencil and a highlighter
Think positive thoughts- you are ready for this!
EOC Expository Essay Reminders
You will be writing an expository essay that is 1 page (26 lines) in length.
An expository essay is an essay that explains something
The most important thing you need at the beginning of your essay is a clear thesis statement that answers the prompt
Take time to plan out your essay before you write it. You can do a quick “bullet point” type outline, a bubble map, and/ or write a rough draft
After you have done the revising and editing section, return to your essay plan/ outline and write your final draft on the answer document.
Better examples make better essays- take time to think about topics that are specific and well thought out
Write in detail- you should fill all, or close to all, of your page
Remember to tie back all ideas/ body paragraphs to your thesis: how does this help prove your point
