Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
We have had a great last couple of weeks here at school as we head into the February break. Thankfully, our Covid positive case count has diminished dramatically and school attendance is finally back to normal! We sent home the iHealth At Home Covid testing kits with administration directions to all families yesterday. We want you to test your child on Sunday, February 27th prior to returning to school on Monday, February 28th. If your child tests positive, please keep them home and contact the school using our Student Absence Reporting Form and the school district wants you to also notify them here(if they test negative send them to school).
I want to thank our Community School Coordinator Jose Luna for coordinating a wonderful Random Acts of Kindness Week(enjoy the photos below). Students wrote down acts of kindness on balloons that were put on the "We Lift Each Other Up" mural that was very visible in the hallway behind the office by the blue tables where students eat lunch. Additionally, students participated in a number of kindness activities in the classroom. The Kindness messages were great reminders of what a wonderful school community we have!
Our 4th and 5th grade students and teachers enjoyed an in person visit from Stefanie Rome our Instructional coach from National Urban Alliance. Stefanie has been working with our 4th and 5th grade teachers this year on lesson/unit design, building relationships, student engagement, and teaching strategies based on Dr. Yvette Jackson's Pedagogy of Confidence work. I particularly enjoyed the "Who, What, When, Where, and How?" Rap strategy she modeled with Maestro Ignacio's 5th graders. The class then used the Rap to demonstrate their knowledge of the Boston Tea Party in a fun and engaging way.
We had a good group for the Principal's Coffee. We discussed the upcoming Danny G Dance performances for the 1st graders and the TK/Kindergarteners on March 11th. Unfortunately, parents may not attend the show in person at the school. The students will perform outside in front of the Hero Tree mural and we will broadcast the assembly live via Zoom. The show will also be videotaped, edited, and the link sent out to parents.
- March 11th 1st grade Show at 9:00am: Join with ZOOM Passcode: DannyG
- March 11th TK/K Show at 11:00am: Join with Zoom Passcode: DannyG
We also discussed the upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences(March 14-18th) and the progress on the Alebrije Official Mascot Design.
I appreciate our parents continuing to communicate with us immediately and keeping their child home when their child is sick, tested positive for Covid, or if someone in the household tested positive. In order to facilitate communication with the school and save time when your child is absent for any reason, we want all families to use the Student Absence Reporting Form in lieu of calling the office. You will notice the form does not have a place to enter the date and that is because it has a time stamp when it is completed. Our Office Staff can more efficiently go through the form and excuse absences in our Powerschool system. If there are any questions, particularly around Covid cases, we will call you directly for more information.
Upcoming Science Fair
The date has been changed for the Science Fair and our STEAM night from March 24 to April 21st. Parents we still need your help making sure your child signs up to participate. Parent volunteer Arnuj Gaggar is coordinating this event and needs to know how many kits and presentation boards to prepare. He also still needs more volunteers to help prepare and organize the wonderful event. Please email wsedar@rcsdk8.net if you would like to help. We will be providing more information in the future.
Tutoring/Homework Help - Grades 3-5
Adelante Selby 3-5th grade parents, Tutor.com is now available for students who would like or benefit from access to online homework help when they are working at home.
Students can access the help by clicking on the "Waffle" menu on their Chrome browser on their Chromebook from school. They will scroll down and click on the Tutor.com icon. (Note that they need to be signed in to Chrome using their RCSD accounts.) We are also working on having a link in Clever accessible in the future.
Once students are logged in, they can follow the steps in this video to sign up for help. Following these steps will help them get a tutor who has knowledge in the particular area they need.
Tutor.com has also provided these resources that we can share with families.
