Bottom's Dream

because it hath no bottom

Nick Bottom

Nick Bottom is a very interesting character in William Shakespeare's A Mid-Summer Night's Dream. Bottom himself is almost nonessential to the progression of the plot. He is not really relate-able as a character. And his character make very little development during the play. But Mr. Bottom is important for another reason, rather than being important for the advancement of the play rather bottom is important for the sake of the audience. Some people (myself included) would rather not watch a 2 hour play about the switching of lovers. Bottoms character appears in this play to give the audience something else to watch, something else to laugh at. Bottoms comedy is in essence a way for Shakespeare to keep his audience from getting to bored and leaving.

This "Flyer" will attempt to summarize all of Bottom's role in the play in both a literal and metaphorical way in songs.

One of the tried and true methods of many comics is to have an ignorant charecter that may have good intentions end up causing something bad or have something bad happen to them. This is clearly a tactic used by Shakespeare in this play. Bottom himself is turned into an ass because of his stupidity.

Goodbye Stranger by SUpertramp

Though this song is clearly about saying goodbye and I think it is more profound than something bottom would sing, there a messages in the song that would speak to bottom after his performance with the Duke. Lines like bottom talking to the duke.

I believe in what you say, is the undisputed truth

Tried to see your point of view

Andd even lines consoling himself after his not so sucsessful play

Feel no sorrow feel no shame, come tommorow, feel no pain

This also feels like a stubborn bottomesqe idea.

Part of the song is even sung in a thisbian falsetto

Goodbye Stranger

Lemon tree by fools gardern

"yesterday you told me about the Blue blue sky and all that i can see is just a yellow lemon tree"

this man like bottom, has a narrow view of the world. And he wants to fix it butis stuck in this view of only being able to see the lemon tree. He wants to grow and learn

"turning my head up and down, turning turning turning all around and all that i can see is just a yellow lemon tree"

but he cant grow, he cant grow because he is to preoccupied with the idea that

"but Nothing Ever happens"

he is holding himself back, Bottom does this though it is less aparent. I think bottom knows he is such a fool and he probably doesnt like it but he cant invest in all the energy required to change. Espacially if

"Nothing Ever Happens"

Fool's Garden - Lemon Tree

The logical song by Roger Hodgson

it's pretty clear The Logical pretty clear is a song about growing up. But I think the details described in this song could make someone like bottom. And makes bottoms ignorance rather honorable

Children

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,

A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.

Adults

"But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,

Clinical, intellectual, cynical."

"Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!"

Bottom doesn't want to be a vegetable, cynical, or logical. Bottom is ignorant because he doesn't want to be part of the system he doesn't want to grow up, he wants to be a romantic, not a cynic. and bottom decided the the easiest way to do that is to stay a fool. He took the Idea "ignorance is bliss" and ran with it.

Another Brick in the wall by Pink Floyd

This is another song about bottoms quest to make himself a better human being, But rather than not growing now bottom is differentiating himself from his peers. Bottom wants to remain unique to stay away from the system. Because bottom believes that this path of life will lead him to the cynicism he so hated in the previous song.

School by Roger Hodgson

Rather than not letting himself grow up now. Bottom is now older and in this world grown up. But bottom now has a bigger challenge than taking care of himself. He has Kids! Bottom wants them to not grow up so fast. Keep them watching sesame street one more year. If not for his own sake but for theirs. Bottom has grown cynical but he wants his kids to be able to different as long as possible.

In the mood by alphaville

Staying a fool wasn't easy for bottom. There was plenty of temptations to make him want to grow up. He wanted to grow up and to wise up many times.

"In the Mood to touch the Fire"

many times he wanted to touch the fire, or do something compelling but ultimately bad, but had to resist so he could achieve his state of rather foolish enlightenment, his own kind of personal Nirvana, where he doesn't have to be a realist. he doesn't have to logical. he suppressed is urge to "play with Fire" and now he can be free.

Ride my see-Saw by moody blues

Not too many songs love to talk about be foolish in the most literal sense. But I think this songs sound really embraces bottom's spirit. Very Casual and mater of factly but still very invested in what he is doing. A similar theme but never quite the same. Bottom is cleary invested in putting on the play and hes working hard to do it. but he never seems to be super formal and hard working, very similar to what i think the song sounds like

Breakfast in America by Supertramp

Bottom here is longing here for his state of Nirvana, his state of ignorance. personified in this song as America. Here how he is saying how great things without tings being true

"they got to have 'em in Texas

Cos everyone is a millionaire"

Bottom knows this isn't true. He isn't that big of a fool! But he is just so exited that he doesn't hare for all he cares

"Everyone is a millionaire."

He wants to believe that its just so great. And isn't that he wants in the first place, to be able to believe things that aren't true, to to be able to toss aside logic and just to love, live, and when the time comes die. He wants to live in the moment. so what does he care if

"Everyone is a millionaire."

or not.

Wish you where here by pink floyd

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Do you think you can tell heaven from hell?

Because I think I can and so can most people.

But not bottom He cant.

Bottom is such a fool that he cant tell a green feild from a cold steel rail.

He is so confounded about what's happening around him that he cant tell good from bad. he is too busy trying to stay ignorant that he cant bother telling good from bad.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

Fools overture by roger hodgson

Finally a song dedicated to people like bottom!!!

A song about fools!!!

Called the man a fool, striped him of his pride
Everyone was laughing up until the day he died
And though the wound went deep
Still he's calling us out of our sleep
My friends, we're not alone
He waits in silence to lead us all home

This is what happened at The play of pyramus and thisbehe was called a fool and laughed at his pride was hurt even if he knows he is a fool. Does a fat man enjoy being called fat even if he knows it is true?? that is how bottom felt, but there is hope. "still he's calling us out of our sleep.
