Bottom's Dream
because it hath no bottom
Nick Bottom
This "Flyer" will attempt to summarize all of Bottom's role in the play in both a literal and metaphorical way in songs.
Goodbye Stranger by SUpertramp
I believe in what you say, is the undisputed truth
Tried to see your point of view
Andd even lines consoling himself after his not so sucsessful play
Feel no sorrow feel no shame, come tommorow, feel no pain
This also feels like a stubborn bottomesqe idea.
Part of the song is even sung in a thisbian falsetto
Lemon tree by fools gardern
this man like bottom, has a narrow view of the world. And he wants to fix it butis stuck in this view of only being able to see the lemon tree. He wants to grow and learn
"turning my head up and down, turning turning turning all around and all that i can see is just a yellow lemon tree"
but he cant grow, he cant grow because he is to preoccupied with the idea that
"but Nothing Ever happens"
he is holding himself back, Bottom does this though it is less aparent. I think bottom knows he is such a fool and he probably doesnt like it but he cant invest in all the energy required to change. Espacially if
"Nothing Ever Happens"
The logical song by Roger Hodgson
Children
When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
Adults
"But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,Logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
Clinical, intellectual, cynical."
"Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!"
Bottom doesn't want to be a vegetable, cynical, or logical. Bottom is ignorant because he doesn't want to be part of the system he doesn't want to grow up, he wants to be a romantic, not a cynic. and bottom decided the the easiest way to do that is to stay a fool. He took the Idea "ignorance is bliss" and ran with it.
Another Brick in the wall by Pink Floyd
School by Roger Hodgson
In the mood by alphaville
"In the Mood to touch the Fire"
many times he wanted to touch the fire, or do something compelling but ultimately bad, but had to resist so he could achieve his state of rather foolish enlightenment, his own kind of personal Nirvana, where he doesn't have to be a realist. he doesn't have to logical. he suppressed is urge to "play with Fire" and now he can be free.
Ride my see-Saw by moody blues
Breakfast in America by Supertramp
"they got to have 'em in Texas
Cos everyone is a millionaire"
Bottom knows this isn't true. He isn't that big of a fool! But he is just so exited that he doesn't hare for all he cares
"Everyone is a millionaire."
He wants to believe that its just so great. And isn't that he wants in the first place, to be able to believe things that aren't true, to to be able to toss aside logic and just to love, live, and when the time comes die. He wants to live in the moment. so what does he care if
"Everyone is a millionaire."
or not.
Wish you where here by pink floyd
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Do you think you can tell heaven from hell?
Because I think I can and so can most people.
But not bottom He cant.
Bottom is such a fool that he cant tell a green feild from a cold steel rail.
He is so confounded about what's happening around him that he cant tell good from bad. he is too busy trying to stay ignorant that he cant bother telling good from bad.
Fools overture by roger hodgson
A song about fools!!!
Called the man a fool, striped him of his pride
Everyone was laughing up until the day he died
And though the wound went deep
Still he's calling us out of our sleep
My friends, we're not alone
He waits in silence to lead us all home
This is what happened at The play of pyramus and thisbehe was called a fool and laughed at his pride was hurt even if he knows he is a fool. Does a fat man enjoy being called fat even if he knows it is true?? that is how bottom felt, but there is hope. "still he's calling us out of our sleep.
