Homecoming 2018
Central Lee Community, Parents, and Students,
It has been a great start to the 2018-2019 school year! Thank goodness we have air conditioning in our buildings. As we have experienced numerous days of 90+ degree days, area schools have continued to get out early while we have been able to stay in school for a full day of learning. Luckily, we might get to experience a bit of Fall soon before the winter weather starts rearing its ugly head.
Before I get to the main part of the update, I wanted to alert you to a change in the school calendar. We learned that our local cities have scheduled trick or treat night for October 30 instead of October 31. We originally had parent/teacher conference night scheduled for October 30. Due to this, we are going to move the first night of P/T conferences to Monday, October 29. We will plan on P/T conferences for Monday, October 29 and Thursday, November 1 from 4pm-8pm. Friday, November 2 will be a no school day. An updated school calendar can be found here.
Homecoming 2018
Let’s talk about Homecoming! First, let’s start with the non-school sponsored part of homecoming. We are fully aware that our students take part in “TP’ing” during homecoming week. In fact, my house gets hit at least a few times during the week. Each morning, my three boys and I are normally outside picking stuff up. In my three years at Central Lee, our students have been respectful while partaking in this activity on my property. I am aware of stories in which there has been a lack of respect and/or trespassing.
Here is what people need to know regarding this type of activity. First, we heavily communicate our expectations for our students and the potential consequences for students in partaking in unwanted activity. Last year, Sheriff Weber and Principal Herdrich spoke to all of our students about trespassing, vandalism, and being respectful to property owners. Our students responded very positively to our messages. We will once again communicate our expectations for behavior for our students. Since this type of activity takes place off school grounds, we encourage you to communicate with Lee County Sheriff’s office or your local police if you have a homecoming incident that needs to be addressed. Throughout the week, the Sheriff’s office and my office are in constant communication. With our school resource officer on staff, we expect even tighter communication between the two entities this year.
If students are out and about on homecoming weeknights, I encourage them to be in small groups. Do not enter someone’s property for which you are not welcome. Our students know which people are not tolerant of “homecoming traditions”. Our students need to understand they can jeopardize their extracurricular eligibility if they make poor choices during homecoming week. Together, let’s make homecoming a fun event for ALL (students, staff, parents, and community members).
Ok, moving on from toilet paper. We do have some changes to a few homecoming activities this year. The biggest change will be with the crowning of the homecoming king and queen. Instead of crowning these individuals at the Friday night football game, we will be doing this on Thursday evening instead. This year we are introducing our first annual “Homecoming Community Night”. All community members are invited to attend a community potluck from 6:00-6:45 at the Central Lee High School cafeteria. After the potluck, we will have our annual powderpuff football game and community pep rally from 7-8pm. Once the pep rally concludes, we will crown our 2018 homecoming king and queen. Our student council has worked hard to determine how to make homecoming better and this was one of their strategies. We hope everyone will try to attend and make this a great event for our students and community! A flyer about Thursday evening can be found here.
The annual homecoming parade will take place in Argyle this year at 3 pm on Friday, September 28. School will dismiss at 1 pm on that Friday. Argyle does not have a lot of parking so we encourage people to get there early! If you are interested in putting a float in the parade, please contact the high school office. This is normally a big hit for our community and I am looking forward to another great parade this year! The Friday night football game will kickoff at 7 pm vs. Albia. We hope to have a big crowd to support our 2018 Central Lee football team!
Homecoming is designed to be a celebration of school pride for students, alumni, and community members. I hope everyone has a safe and fun homecoming week. I’m looking forward to celebrating “Central Lee”!
