10 Characteristics of a High Character Player
- No Plays Off The temptation for players is to take possessions off when they are tired or mentally fatigued. This usually happens on the defensive end of the court. High character players stay mentally engaged when they are on the court, and they recognize that they have a responsibility to the team to be locked in on every play.
- Maximum Effort There are always going to be players that are more naturally gifted and faster than others. They can finish in the top 3 on every sprint without having to output maximum effort. A high character player recognizes that they are competing against themselves to run as fast as they can. They try to win every sprint and run as fast as they can each time.
- Competes in Every Drill There are always going to be certain basketball drills that players like more than others. The tendency with this is to give less effort on the drills that aren’t as fun or as enjoyable. This is not how high character players approach drills though. Instead they have already made a commitment to compete and give their best effort in every drill that they do because they want to improve individually and also help the team get better.
- Leads by Example We have all heard the phrase, “talk is cheap.” This is especially true when it comes to leadership. Anyone can talk about doing the right things, but it takes a special player to stay committed to doing it the right way day in and day out, regardless of how they are feeling on a certain day. High character players lead with their actions on a daily basis.
- Holds Teammates Accountable
- Celebrates Other's Success Whether your role is leading scorer or 12th man on the team, it is important that high character players celebrate another teammate's success and the success of the team. This doesn't mean that you don't work hard for a bigger role on the team, but there is no place for talking bad about teammates or complaining about minutes.
- First In and Last Out
- Does the Right thing when No One is Watching
- Invested in Teammates Getting in the gym and working on your individual skill development is great. However, the next step and a sign of a high character player is bringing teammates with you. High character players are invested in their teammates and they understand that they can't do it all on there own. They recognize that it takes a great team to win games and ultimately championships.
- Communicates at a High Level Basketball is a game of communication. Whether you are on the defensive end of the court, on the bench, or on offense, you should always be communicating. Communication saves breakdowns and helps the team’s overall success. As a high character player you want to be the best communicator on your team. Communication is contagious, and before you know it the whole team will follow your lead and begin to communicate on a high level.
*High character players are a must for any team that has championship goals. It takes players that are willing to step up and lead and get everyone moving towards one common purpose. Players like this are invaluable to a team.
OUR FINAL ROWERS OF THE WEEK + A FEW PADDLES
Rowers of the Week for MAXIMUM EFFORT & COMPETES IN EVERY DRILL
SARAH MRZENA is someone who really stepped up when we needed her; with Mike out with a mild concussion...we needed other teammates to step up and 'get big' in the post. We have several girls capable, but stepping up in a game to a new role is easier said than done. Well, this girl did just that, pulled down some some rebounds, helped on the post defense, and scored some buckets. I hope that SARAH realizes when she gives her Maximum Effort she is capable of being a huge impact on the team's success! We can really use all hands on deck for the GAC tourney!
SYDNEY ROGERS I know is trying her hardest no matter what she is asked to do in any drill or on the court in a game. She never questions my guidance, but she can at times question herself. Many times your toughest opponent is yourself and all season long she has endured ups an downs with this battle. I have seen her take some tough hits at practice and I ask her to play multiple roles. I know at times she doesn't think she is the best for the job, but she goes in and does it the best she can anyway. I appreciate SYDNEY and the way she COMPETES IN EVERY DRILL at practice. While working on making herself a better player, she pushes her teammates to do the same.
Final ROWERS OF THE WEEK are KYLEE ROGAN & ANNA SHULER
Extra Paddles for INVESTING IN THEIR TEAMMATES & COMMUNICATING AT A HIGH LEVEL
Molly and Rebecca show just how Invested in Their Teammates they really are. Becks is constantly picking up her teammates with motivational comments and noticing them when they do a great job. She has also stepped up big when we have needed her and has showed how true commitment can pay off on the court. Molly is always putting her teammates first on the court and with her assist % going up, our team scoring average has done the same. I tell the girls all the time I'd rather be known for making the greatest pass than the greatest shot because one doesn't exist without the other.
We have a lot of quiet voices in this group which was part of the team's struggle in the beginning. We have had a few voices grow over the season, but there has always been one voice that has led us loud and clear. Without KELSEY, it would have been difficult for the others to learn the importance of COMMUNICATING AT A HIGH LEVEL. Some leaders solely lead by example, but the most effective ones, the ones that bring others along, lead by what they do and what they say.
