Inclement Weather Policy of Asheville City Schools
(If you aren't receiving text alerts from WLOS for Asheville City Schools closures and delays, we recommend signing up for them here. After entering your contact information, you'll find the 'School Closings' notification section close to the bottom of the sign-up page.)
As we prepare for potential inclement weather conditions that could impact our school day, please understand that SHOULD a decision be made for "No Buses on Icy Roads," the roads below are automatic NO TRAVEL roads. Please remember that a bus driver may use their professional judgment on ANY ROAD they feel is unsafe to travel. We encourage you to speak to your regular bus driver to help determine available alternate bus stops when "No Buses on Icy Roads" has been issued. Historically, these roads are prone to ice, making it dangerous to safely travel in a school bus. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. As a reminder, when a decision is made for “No Buses on Icy Roads" the following roads will never be traveled on by Asheville City Schools bus drivers.

Additional information about student participation will be shared soon!
Description of the GOTR Program--
Over a period of 10 weeks, girls participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.
The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. We start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. Then, we look at the importance of team work and healthy relationships. And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world.
Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. At the end of each three month session, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5K event. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Completing the 5K gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible.

Fun Run SUCCESS!
Fun Run 2018 was a HUGE success! Final numbers are now tallied and we’re pleased to announce our amazing Claxton community was able to raise $30,750.87!!! Way to go team!!! This is an incredible amount of money and we’re so very grateful to all the parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, friends and neighbors who pledged our CLX Leaders!!! These funds will be used to help with field trip scholarships, cultural arts programming and so much more. A special thanks to our outstanding Fun Run Co-Chairs, Wren London and Sara Niedenthal, for supporting our school by sharing their leadership and time!

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year
Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule.
All trainings are held at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.
