Inclement Weather Policy of Asheville City Schools

(If you aren't receiving text alerts from WLOS for Asheville City Schools closures and delays, we recommend signing up for them here. After entering your contact information, you'll find the 'School Closings' notification section close to the bottom of the sign-up page.)

As we prepare for potential inclement weather conditions that could impact our school day, please understand that SHOULD a decision be made for "No Buses on Icy Roads," the roads below are automatic NO TRAVEL roads. Please remember that a bus driver may use their professional judgment on ANY ROAD they feel is unsafe to travel. We encourage you to speak to your regular bus driver to help determine available alternate bus stops when "No Buses on Icy Roads" has been issued. Historically, these roads are prone to ice, making it dangerous to safely travel in a school bus. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. As a reminder, when a decision is made for “No Buses on Icy Roads" the following roads will never be traveled on by Asheville City Schools bus drivers.

Girls on the Run Spring 2019 & Volunteer Coach Opportunity

We are looking for parents and community members who are interested in serving as volunteer coaches for a 3rd-5th grade Girls on the Run program at Claxton in Spring 2019! You don't need to be a runner to be a coach! If you'd like to learn more, visit https://www.gotrwnc.org/coach and contact Claxton's Volunteer Coordinator at miriam.scott@acsgmail.net.

Additional information about student participation will be shared soon!

Description of the GOTR Program--

Over a period of 10 weeks, girls participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.

The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. We start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. Then, we look at the importance of team work and healthy relationships. And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world.

Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. At the end of each three month session, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5K event. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Completing the 5K gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible.

Spirit Night at Farm Burger in Downtown Asheville

Support our school by visiting Farm Burger's Downtown Asheville location on Thurs, Nov 29 between 4-9pm. Farm Burger is contributing 10% of dinner proceeds to Claxton to support student access to a variety of cultural enrichment activities! It is really great food for a wonderful cause! Spread the word and invite your friends and family! You can share the event on Facebook through this link.

Make-Up Picture Day

Our make-up day for student pictures is Tues, Nov 27. Students that were absent on picture day (10/12) can have pictures taken and orders can be placed online at https://entry.imagequix.com/strawbridge/?code=100796. If you received pictures and aren't happy with them, your student will be allowed to re-take them on the date only if the student returns the complete purchased package before having a new picture taken.

Fun Run SUCCESS!

Fun Run 2018 was a HUGE success! Final numbers are now tallied and we’re pleased to announce our amazing Claxton community was able to raise $30,750.87!!! Way to go team!!! This is an incredible amount of money and we’re so very grateful to all the parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, friends and neighbors who pledged our CLX Leaders!!! These funds will be used to help with field trip scholarships, cultural arts programming and so much more. A special thanks to our outstanding Fun Run Co-Chairs, Wren London and Sara Niedenthal, for supporting our school by sharing their leadership and time!

Homework and Community Resources

Here are some great resources available specifically to Asheville City Schools families through United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County:

  • Homework Diner: Every Tuesday 5:00-7:00 at Asheville Middle in the Cafeteria. A free family meal is provided and help with homework from teachers and volunteers. See flyer for more details.
  • Asheville Middle School Community Resource Room: Room 216, on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9 to 11 and 1 to 3. This room provides access to information on community resources, internet and computer access, and 2-1-1- service line access.

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer! https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule.

All trainings are held at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.
