The Chalkley Communicator
Family Edition - January 20, 2020
Greetings Chalkley Families,
I hope that you have taken some time today to reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy. Below are some resources shared in The Washington Post to help families discuss Dr. Martin Luther King with their little ones.
For younger kids, friends recommended:
- “I Am Martin Luther King Jr.” from the Ordinary People Change the World series, for ages 5-8
- “I Have a Dream” book and audio CD with a recording of the speech. The book pairs King’s speech with illustrations, for ages 5 and up.
- “Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” for ages 5-9
- “My First Biography: Martin Luther King, Jr.,” part of the My First Biography series, for ages 4-8

Attendance Matters
Attendance is a critical part of a child's success at school. Studies show that students with poor attendance, regardless of reason, are more likely to experience academic struggles. Just two absences a month can exceed 18 absences per school year; three late arrivals equal one absence. Every single day matters.
Remember to call the school at (804) 674 - 1300 to report an absence.

Reminders
Reminders:
- You MUST pull all the way through the student drop off line in the morning. Listen to the directions of the staff members on the drop off line. They are trying to ensure that our process is smooth and safe.
- Additionally, there will be no parking until 8:30 once morning drop off has concluded. We will ask you to move your vehicle.
Remember to complete the online volunteer form if you would like to volunteer in our building. We would love to have more family volunteers!!
- Remember to send your child with sneakers on his/her gym day. All students must closed toe shoes everyday. Students are not permitted to wear slippers, house shoes, or slides to school.
- Do not arrive to parent drop off in the morning prior to 8:00. Early arrival congests traffic on Turner Road as parents who arrive within the recommended window are backed into the road. We do not let students into the building until 8:10. Students are not permitted to be dropped off prior to 8:10 as there is no one to supervise them.
- Stay in the know about transportation by visiting the CCPS transportation page. Click on this link.
We are looking forward to seeing our Chalkley Roadrunners tomorrow! Remember, #WeRUNasONE! #BeTheDifference
