Reusch Report
SMS Bulldog Family,
We are off to a great start! This year in my Reusch Report I plan to give you important info that sometimes we don’t publicize enough. This month I want to bring your attention to the District Attendance Policy and our new Ident-a-Kid Security System.
Attendance Policy
The state department has changed how we are required to track attendance. Three (3) different attendance events have been defined:
- Tardy = an absence 35% (or less) of a day
- Half Day = an absence of 35% to 84% of a day
- Full Day = an absence greater than 84% of the day
Henderson County Schools Policy 9.123:
- Any absence or tardy, regardless of the length of time, is considered an attendance event;
- A maximum of eight (8) absences and/or tardy events per school year (4 per semester) may be excused by a parent note;
- A statement from a medical practitioner, dentist, the judicial system, or county health department will be required for any additional absences and/or tardiness;
- Vacation and family trips that would cause a student to be absent should be planned around the school calendar;
- EHO-Educational Enhancement Opportunities previously used for vacation type absences should not be used for family vacations during the approved school calendar;
- Students are required to attend school regularly;
- Students are allowed four (4) parent notes or excused absences each semester;
- When a student has accumulated four (4) excused absences in a semester, further absences are only excused by a doctor’s note;
- Note from doctor or parent must be received within three (3) school days of the absence;
- It is the student’s responsibility to get the note to the appropriate person at his/her school; and
- Students who arrive at school late or leave early without a valid excuse are considered tardy.
Excused and Unexcused Absences
- Absences before or after a scheduled holiday, fall, winter or spring break or senior prom are unexcused unless excused by a doctor or the absence is deemed an emergency; and
- Parent notes cannot be used for absences before or after a scheduled event.
Truancy
Kentucky School Law 159.150- definition of truant and habitual truant: “Any student who has been absent from school without a valid excuse for three (3) days or tardy three (3) days, is a truant. Any student who has been reported as a truant two (2) or more times is a habitual truant.”
Students who are habitual truants - six (6) unexcused absences - are subject to a truancy petition being filed through the Court Designated Workers’ office or an Educational Neglect Petition being filed on the student’s parent/guardian.
Ident-a-Kid’s Complete Campus Security Solution Visitor Management System
Henderson County Schools is implementing the Ident-a-Kid’s Complete Campus Security Solution Visitor Management System for the 2017-18 school year. All schools in the district will be able to track visitors and volunteers entering and exiting the building. Using the self-service kiosk at the front desk, visitors will need to produce either their driver's license or identification card. Once a visitor is cleared through the system, a badge is printed with the visitor's name, date and time they arrived and destination. When the visitor leaves the building, they will repeat the sign-in process. We are asking all visitors to bring their driver’s license or identification card upon entering the school building. Please pass along this information to all relatives that may be visiting the school. We are excited about this new system and the extra security it provides for our students. If you have any questions, please do hesitate to contact South Middle School at 270-831-5050.
