What is Sustainability

Sustainability is creating and maintaining the conditions under which humans and nature are able to co-exist in productive harmony, while fulfilling the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations. If an item or an activity is said to be sustainable, then it should be able to last forever under all circumstances.

Some examples of energy sustainability are Solar and Wind Power. Solar energy relies on the fusion power from the core of the sun. The energy could be collected and used in a variety of ways such as solar water heating or attic cooling using solar attic fans. Also, solar energy could be directly converted to electrical energy, creating mirrors, boilers or photo voltaic cells.

Climate Change

One form of sustainability using climate change is through wind power. The movement of the atmosphere is driven by differences of temperature and climate at the Earth's surface when lit by sunlight. Wind energy can be used to pump water or generate electricity. However, it requires a lot of land in order to significant amounts of energy.

Waste Management

Recycling bins are the most common method of waste management. Recycling bins are basically a container that is used to hold recyclable items until they are taken to center and recycled. Many recycling bins have a blue or green color with the international recycling symbol placed on them. Also, bins could be different color in order to differentiate between the types of materials that should be placed in them.

Hybrid cars are much more fuel efficient than conventional vehicles. They are much more likely to reduce the amount of the Carbon Dioxide released from fuel emissions. That is because the average mileage for a hybrid is 38.7 miles per gallon while conventional cars average only about 26.7 miles per gallon. Therefore, hybrid cars require far less gas to cover the same distance. Also, every gallon of gasoline contains 20 pounds of carbon dioxide that means that for every 100 miles, a hybrid car will emit 23.3 pounds less than a conventional car.

Plants, animals, and microorganisms all need to co-exist. That is what biodiversity means. Almost all cultures have in some form recognized the importance and necessity of nature and its biological diversity and the need to maintain it. That is when all of the other sustainable issues come onto play. Each one of them has an effect on biodiversity. Having biodiversity is key to having a healthy ecosystem. For example, a larger number of plant species means a greater variety of crops which ensures natural sustainability for all life forms which means that healthy ecosystems can better withstand and recover from a variety of disasters. Therefore, while humans dominate this planet, preserving the diversity in nature is a must.
