First round of high school choice ends Feb. 5
Families have until 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5 to submit selections for the first round of high school choice.
CMSD allows families to choose their schools, provided that space is available and, in a few cases, students meet admissions criteria.
Most of the students involved in the high school choice process are now in the eighth grade, but families of students who are already enrolled in a high school and want to change also may submit choices.
After the first round of student assignments are made, the portal will reopen from March 1 through April 23 for choosing both high schools and PreK-8 or K-8 schools.
The last of four high school information sessions will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today, Monday, Feb. 1. To register, visit the choice portal, ChooseCMSD.org.
Families can explore the District’s many high school options by using a digital High School Choice Book found at clevelandmetroschools.org/HighSchoolChoiceBook
For more information or to submit selections, go to ChooseCMSD.org.
Note: CMSD graduates can receive Say Yes to Education scholarships that pay up to the full value of tuition, minus federal and state aid, at all public colleges, universities and Pell-eligible training programs in Ohio and more than 100 private colleges and universities across the country. To be eligible, students must live in the District or city of Cleveland and be continuously enrolled in a CMSD or partnering charter high school from ninth grade until graduation. More information on the scholarships is available at sayyescleveland.org.
CMSD taking survey of families, staff
CMSD is taking the latest in a series of surveys asking students, parents, caregivers and staff about their experiences with remote learning.
The survey, which will be used to improve and support teaching and learning, also asks about preferences for how instruction will be conducted going forward.
Families and staff were to receive the survey by email or text today (Feb. 1). They also may take the survey through the Schoology learning platform or by using links on the District website – ClevelandMetroSchools.org – and social media.
The survey will close at 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 18.
Parent-teacher conferences set for Feb. 3
CMSD PreK-8 and high schools will hold virtual parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
Wednesday is the day set aside for students to work independently during remote learning. Parents and caregivers who cannot meet Wednesday can arrange another date and time with their child’s teacher.
Parents and caregivers who do not have a conference scheduled should contact their child’s teacher.
Playhouse Square offering virtual performances
Playhouse Square continues to help CMSD students stay connected to the arts during the pandemic.
CMSD teachers and classrooms can get free access to an online series of matinee performances. Besides the show, the streaming package includes educational resources; workshops, created by the artists, before and after the show; and a teacher’s guide.
Options include five plays that make up a social justice series designed for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The series is part of commitment by Playhouse Square and other organizations to fight systemic racism in the community.

Playhouse Square is a popular field-trip destination for schools throughout the region. During the pandemic, it has developed other ways to serve students.
In January, Playhouse Square and Disney partnered to help CMSD families stream Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical for free.
Webinar helps parents support children’s reading
Parents and caregivers can learn how to better support their children in learning to read by attending an online webinar on Wednesday, Feb. 3 or Tuesday, Feb. 9.
The webinar will show parents how to encourage reading at home with digital books and tools.
