SADD News (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
The SADD chapter held their “kick off” meeting on August 18 at 7: 50 am. Freshman Patrick Sander won the monster “back to school” cookie. The mission of SADD was explained to all and the duties of the officers were explained. Those students interested in running for office were encouraged to do so.
The officers that were elected during our September 1st meeting were – President Grace Kappner, Vice President Ross Eckert, Secretary Sydney Altmeyer, and Treasurer Kathryn Brewer. Congratulations!
Upcoming activities for SADD members include a tailgate party, an ice cream social, selecting a t shirt design for the club, and a club volleyball tourney. SADD meetings take place on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:50 am in the auditorium. Dues are $2.00.
FRESHMAN MENTORS
The freshman mentors “hit the ground running” by participating in a day long training on August 3rd followed by welcoming the freshman at the orientation on August 4th. Three mentors were assigned to each freshman homeroom and they will spend the homeroom period on Fridays with their assigned freshman homeroom.
The role of a freshman mentor is to help the incoming freshman have a smooth transition to high school. Mentors plan and carry out a variety of activities that help the students learn about the expectations at the high school
The 2015-2016 freshman mentors are: Seniors – Sydney Altmeyer, Kathryn Brewer, Haili Estabrook, Jade Jochem, Grace Kappner, Mitchell Mundy, and Fran Rivas. Juniors – Sandy Avalos, Nathan Bromm, Jordan Echeverria, Ross Eckert, Isaac Englert, Samantha Lange, Lauren Meyer, Christian Motteler, Kendyl McKeough, Justin Reed, Harrison Steckler, Chase Stetter, Tori Tretter, and Brayden Wibbeler. Personalized Study with Khan Academy
The College Board and Khan Academy® have partnered to make practicing easy and personal. At Khan Academy, you can access thousands of questions approved by the College Board, take four official SAT practice tests, and create personalized study plans based on your results.
Taking an SAT practice test is good practice for the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 because the assessments measure the same skills and knowledge in ways that make sense for different grade levels.
The PSAT will be given to all sophomores and juniors at SHS on Wednesday, October 14. The State of Indiana will be paying for all of the sophomores and juniors to take the PSAT. Results are expected in late December.
Dual Credit Changes for 2015-2016
SHS continues to offer dual credit through IVY Tech, Oakland City University, and the University of Southern Indiana however some of the courses that were once offered, are no longer offered.
IVY Tech continues to offer dual credit for the PLTW classes (IED and POE) as well as the Auto Mechanics classes. Registration is done in class and there is no cost.
Oakland City University now only offers Psychology and British Literature. Each of these courses cost $75.00. If your student qualifies for the free/reduced lunch program, the cost of the course will be waived.
In order to qualify to take the dual credit courses through OCU, students must meet one of these requirements - must have a total of 129 on the PSAT or a 1290 on their SAT or a composite score of 18 on their ACT.
Registration takes place here at Southridge High School at the beginning of the semester the student is taking the course. Applications will be available from the teachers of the class or from Mrs. Fowler.
University of Southern Indiana continues to offer Anatomy and Physiology, English Composition, Medical Terminology, Spanish, and Speech. Each class has a different set of requirements for acceptance into the dual credit program. The teacher will review those requirements with the students. Likewise, the cost of the courses also vary. Just like OCU, if a student is eligible for the free/reduced lunch program, the cost of the USI course is also waived.
Unless it is a year-long course, registration for all courses takes place at the beginning of each semester.

SAT/ACT
Seniors planning to attend a 4-year college must soon take either the SAT or the ACT. Information on both of these tests can be found on their respective websites at collegeboard.org – act.org A decision regarding admission will not be rendered by a college until the applicant has reported a test score from either the ACT or the SAT.
Juniors planning to attend a 4-year college should be making plans to take the SAT and/or the ACT in the Spring of 2016. Information regarding test dates and test centers can be found on line at collegeboard.org – act.org

VUJC COLLEGE FAIR will be held in the gymnasium on the Jasper campus from 6:00 -7:30 pm on Monday, September 28th. Students in Grades 9-11: If you belong to the 21st Century Scholars program, don’t forget that you must graduate with a Core 40 Diploma to receive the scholarship. Check out www.scholars.in.gov to update the required annual activities on Scholar Track. See your counselor with any questions.
Juniors: All juniors will take the ASVAB on Thursday, October 29th. This career interest inventory is administered to juniors to help them learn about different career options. Seniors who need to retake the ASVAB for military enlistment purposes should talk to Mrs. Fowler or Mrs. Pulley. Please visit Guidance with any questions.
Juniors and Seniors: College admissions representatives visit SHS throughout the year to talk about their colleges with other students. Juniors and seniors are allowed to sign up and meet with three college admission representatives. Sign-up sheets are located in Guidance.
Juniors: During the year, Mrs. Pulley meets individually with each junior to talk about plans for life after high school. Meetings take as much time as the student needs. Parents are welcome to contact Mrs. Pulley with any questions or concerns at pulleya@swdubois.k12.in.us.

Want to learn more about colleges or technical schools? If you think you may go to college after high school, you can start learning about colleges now by visiting their websites. Finding college websites can be an overwhelming process. Two websites that can be very helpful to students and their families are www.learnmoreindiana.org, and www.bigfuture.org. Both of these have great information on colleges and various college majors.
College Go! Week
Each year Indiana celebrates “College Go Week.” This year it was the week of September 21-25. To celebrate that week, the SHS homeroom teachers were asked to talk to their students on Monday about the importance of high school preparation for college and what they, the teachers, did to prepare for their college experience. Tuesday was “wear your favorite college sweatshirt day, “Wednesday was “wear your favorite college hat day,” and Thursday was dress for success day.
