WCPS Return to Learn Plan
As required by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) is posting the Return to Learn Plan: Reopen and Accelerate Learning. This document outlines the priorities, strategies, and operations of WCPS for continuous learning through the COVID-19 pandemic. Please note the table of contents topics are linked to their respective sections of the plan.
Student Attendance During Distance Learning
According to WCPS policy and Maryland law, daily attendance must be taken by every school. During distance learning, students will be counted present when they sign in to a live, online class with a teacher.
In elementary, middle, and high school, teachers will be taking attendance during every live, online class. In order for teachers to accurately report attendance, students will be required to connect with their teacher during the live session. This means the student must appear on video while attendance is being taken. If the video function is not working properly, the student must communicate in the chat window.
In order to be counted present for the entire day, students must attend more than half of their daily scheduled online learning classes.
If a student is not able to attend an online class on a given day or during a portion of the day, a parent or guardian must provide a written communication to the child’s school so the school can determine if the absence is excused. This can be mailed, emailed, or faxed to the school. As was the case during traditional learning, students with an excused absence have the opportunity to complete missing assignments.
Internet Access for Students
WCPS understands internet access for students is critical to the success of distance learning. We are working with our community partners to ensure students are able to connect online to participate in their virtual classes.
If you currently do not have internet service in your home, please contact your child’s school during normal business hours at your earliest convenience.
Student Electronic Devices
WCPS has expanded our digital device initiative to provide a device to every student during distance learning. Over the summer, 8,000 iPads and nearly 10,000 Chromebooks were ordered with federal CARES grant funds. Due to the high demand of this technology around the world, there are delays in delivery dates.
WCPS staff is currently preparing all available devices for the start of the school year. Your child’s school will communicate with you regarding device pick-up dates.
Evening Support for Students
WCPS is prepared to support our students and families with additional assistance after the school day.
Distance Learning Hotline
Each school will host a hotline where a staff member will be available to respond to questions and troubleshooting issues from parents and students. Whether there is a question about the curriculum content or an issue with the student’s device, a live WCPS employee will be available to assist or refer callers to the appropriate resource. Each school’s hotline will be available from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Video Library
WCPS is developing a video library of curriculum topics by grade level and subject. If a student needs to review a topic that was covered in an online class, this collection of videos will be a convenient resource to reinforce the subject matter, similar to a tutor.
Look for more information about these offerings in the weeks ahead.
