Hitler And His Rise To Power
by Celina Galea
HOW IT STARTED...
In the 1930s, the Great Depression occurred and millions of people did not have any work. A few years earlier, Germany had lost World War I. Germany had no hope for their government, the Weimar Republic. This gave Adolf Hitler and his party 'Nazi' a better chance to become the new leader.
ABOUT HITLER AND HIS PARTY...
Hitler was a powerful speaker who attracted a huge group of Germans that desperately needed a change. He promised the disappointed people a happier life and an improved Germany. The Nazis requested mostly to the people with no job, younger people, and members of the lower middle class. The party's rise to power was instant. Before the Great Depression began, the Nazis were not know by many. They only had 3% of the vote to the Reichstag (German parliament) in the 1924 elections. In the 1932 elections, the Nazis won 33% of the votes, more than any of the other party's. In January 1933 Hitler was made chancellor.
WHY DID PEOPLE SUPPORT HITLER?...
Germans supported Hitler because he promised them what they wanted and needed. People in Germany hated living their their poor quality life. Hitler promised to make Germany proud again. To all Germans he promised to restore German honour by tearing up the hated Treaty of Versailles and by making Germany great again. However, he didn't keep his promises.

Kristallnacht
In almost all German cities that night, store windows of Jewish shops were broken, Jewish houses were destroyed, and synagogues were ruined and set on fire. Many Jews were arrested, and some were even killed.
