Sixth Grade

In sixth grade we have been working on drawing nets for 3 dimensional shapes. After students draw the net, they are calculating the area of each shape. Then the students have to add the area of all the shapes together in order to get the surface area of the 3 dimensional shape. We have been showing grit by sticking to this task. Students need to show all of the steps so that someone else can follow their work. We have been giving each other peer feedback to help improve our work.

Warm spring weather means it's baseball season! Baseball is America's pastime, and a ball game just wouldn't be right if it didn't start with our National Anthem. Ripley Elementary Chorus is honored to have been invited to perform the National Anthem for both the Westfield Little League's opening day ceremonies on Saturday, May 7th, as well as for the Erie SeaWolves Education Day game on Thursday, June 2nd! We are so grateful and excited to have these wonderful opportunities to sing and share our voices with the community. Permission slips will be going home soon with more details.

Cricut Creations

During this session of after school club students had Cricut Creations as a choice. What is a cricut you ask? A cricut is an electronic die cutting machine. Students use a web based design program to create paper crafts, vinyl appliques, and iron on designs. Each student scoured through thousand of projects and images and choose 3 potential projects. They created a project plan, filled in a materials list, and checked with an adult to see if their proposal was doable. They then collected materials from the supply pile and brought everything to the machine. Students helped each other learn how to apply, load, unload and remove materials from the machine and then followed detailed instructions on how to assemble their creations. Every student showed zest & curiosity as they learned how to use this creation tool.

Library Scholars

In library, our kindergarten and first grade scholars have been doing an in-depth study of a book entitled Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly. Although this is a fictional book we have learned so much about butterflies, the monarch to be exact. We have studied and learned new vocabulary words such as metamorphosis, conservatory, chrysalis, migration, and so much more. Ask any of these young scholars and they will be glad to tell you what they mean! Our students are now busy creating their own butterfly books to take home with them.

Our next step will be digging into non-fiction texts about butterflies and comparing and contrasting the fiction and non-fiction texts. These little scholars are showcasing a lot of zest and curiosity as we learn more about the various genres of books while learning all about butterflies!

New York State Assessments

Today we finished the Grades 3-6 New York State Assessments for English Language Arts and Math. It’s evident across all grade levels that our students really wanted to demonstrate what they have learned. Optimism and Grit were two character strengths that came up often as students completed their assessment plans prior to the tests. Most students showed optimism and grit during the assessments by persevering through the assessment even when it may have been challenging; they stayed motivated, focused and showed rigor. We are all so very proud of everything our Ripley Scholars accomplished!
