IHS IB Notes
April 2022
Congratulations to those recently accepted for Scholars! We hope to meet soon.
Speaking of meetings, the April IB Committee meeting will move to the 19th so that it won't happen during break. All parents/guardians are invited to attend via Zoom, and I'll send out a message with the Zoom link that morning to remind you.
This is a very busy time of year, especially for seniors. Please keep watching for messages from school. Seniors, did you see the email about the Inderkum IB Scholarship and SSGN tickets earlier this week?
For those awaiting more news about the SoCal University Tour, expect details about the trip and how to make a deposit when we return from Spring Break.
New IB Gear Available!
When I surveyed about interest in a new Inderkum IB shirt sale, a number of you requested that we have a design done by a student. I'm pleased to present the work of Emmie Li (@eli_theeartist)! She came up with a design that reflected the big book art piece on the edge of our campus and the opportunities that may grow out of participation in IB. Our vendor digitized her design, and I look forward to wearing a new shirt! This is a limited time sale--order by April 20! At that time all items will be printed or embroidered, and I'll distribute before the end of the school year to save you from paying shipping charges. The designs from past sales are available, too, and each comes in a variety of styles and colors. These may be worn proudly as a student, family member or staff member. Click on the picture to access the online store. A percentage of the sales price benefits our IB Committee to help support student events. (The return of class year Scholars shirts is pending the results of our fundraisers.)
Return of the IB Gala
As we continue our progress back to normal, the IB Gala is something that I'm especially anticipating! This is an adults-only evening to have some fun and raise money to support our students and programs. In fact, the Gala is the reason that our Inderkum IB Committee can give scholarships, sponsor university visits, buy graduation stoles, put on events, support teachers and more. Click on the picture below to access tickets. What if you'd like to support the program but you'll be out of town or the gala just isn't your thing? The IB Committee would appreciate donations (cash or gift cards, especially for local businesses). To make a donation or ask about other ways to help, please contact our board president Sonia Mercado.
Fantastic Opportunities
TODAY is the deadline for juniors who want to apply for a Cal Poly SLO Mustang Mentorship. I sent an email with more details previously, but you can read about it here. The Inderkum students who participated in the last group found it to be a valuable experience.
NUSD is partnering with the Natomas Chamber of Commerce and Safe Credit Union to provide a Youth Workforce program that will teach youth important job and life skills and provide paid job opportunities. The program is open to current 10th and 11th grade students who will not attend summer school. Scan the QR code to access the application and more information.
You can participate in the 20th annual Cesar Chavez Youth Leadership Conference on May 14, plus you'll get to learn much more about UC Davis. See the flyer for more information, and to register, you need to contact Ms. Ana, Mrs. Penaska or Mrs. Trimble.
The next Sacramento Speakers Series presenter is Colson Whitehead, Pulitzer Prize winner for The Underground Railroad. As we've had to do for the other events this year, interested students can watch a video of the event--hopefully we'll be back to going in person in the fall! If you'd like to watch Mr. Whitehead, let me know so we can plan a date. If you want to submit any questions for him, email me by the 20th.
Real Talk: Paying for College is a virtual event presented by the College Board (SAT/AP group) focused on helping Black families plan and find money for college. You can register here, and others could sign up, too. This event will be on April 20 & 21.
Any sophomores or juniors who would like to take a class at ARC this summer should be doing their application. You will need your counselor to approve and do the final submission.
If you would like to donate, sell or buy a bike, check out the Jibe Bike Swap happening in May. Proceeds will benefit Inderkum's Bike Tech program and NUSD Foster Youth Services. If you already have a bike and could use a tuneup, make an appointment at a Bike Doc event. I also see flyers around school with an opportunity to get a secure bike lock for just $5!
Service Opportunities
Senior Brandon P. is collecting donations for families whose kids are getting care at the Shriners Hospital. You may have seen his flyers around school. The collection box will still be in my office after break, or email him for more information.
If anyone lets me know that they're interested, I should be able to get more fabric for no-sew fleece blankets to benefit Sacramento Blankets for Sacramento Kids and Itsie Bitsie Rescue. Quite a few students have done these so far.
Foster Hope Sacramento is looking for high school students who might help families by tutoring, being parents' helpers, assisting with meals or laundry and more. Email for more information.
Don't forget that if you're looking for other service or enrichment opportunities, you can find links to past enewsletters on our Scholars/DP page, plus you can search your email for more messages from me.
More Opportunities (that cost money)
Registration is still open for summer enrichment classes for high school students at Sac State.
Global Social Leaders World Catalyst is a virtual program happening in late July from London that will offer lessons and support to those who want to benefit their communities.
AMP Global Scholar offers in-person and virtual programs. They have tiered pricing and scholarship opportunities based on family income.
