In spite of the Pandemic, EC continues to shine in academics, athletics, and the arts. Yes, things may look a little different from masks to limited capacities at events and activities, but the one constant has been that EC students continue to succeed. We've just completed the third quarter and every expectation of finishing this school year in-person...a very different feeling than a year ago when this all started. Thank you to our students, staff, and community for your patience through every transition from eLearning and the shut-downs last spring, to masks, social distancing, and quarantines this fall and winter, to the gradual return to normal we're all beginning to experience as of late. Our successes have been possible because of everyone's willingness to adapt and overcome throughout.

In Academics, we were recently informed of three computer science students, Emma Green, Holli Plowman, and Lydia Smith, being recognized with regional and national awards for Aspirations in Computing through the National Center for Women in Information and Technology. Additionally, we've shared often of this year's wrestlers and their many successes. We can now add academics to that list of accomplishments as well. They were recently recognized with the 3rd highest ranking team GPA among all IHSAA wrestling sectional champions in 2021...true student/athletes! Additionally, having come to the end of our third quarter, grades are in and with that our Honor Roll numbers. 375 students (roughly 30%) of our student population earned Exemplary...straight A's, and 628 total students (roughly 50%) made all A's or all A's and B's. These are outstanding achievements in what has been such a challenging school year.

In athletics, Winter Sports have drawn to a close with multiple EIAC championships, multiple sectional champions, state qualifiers in both boys and girls swim including a 7th place medalist in the 50 free for Nick Weber, more state qualifiers in wrestling than ever before including our first ever wrestling state champion, Bryer Hall at 170lbs. Spring sports began this weekend with our annual indoor meet. Although modified like everything else this year, spring sports are happening unlike a year ago. A big thanks goes to Don Stonefield, athletic director, and all of our coaches and athletes for adhering to protocols in order to keep our seasons going during the 20-21 school year. Also, another big thank you to Trojan Media Productions for bringing us into the LIVE-action week after week; expect to see more of them this spring on the fields, the courts, and the track.

In the arts, discussions are on-going regarding our spring art show. And, Mamma Mia the musical is planned for April 9th, 10th, and 11th. Stay tuned for more information regarding potential general admission ticket sales.

Lastly, we will continue to do everything we can to keep children safe and IN SCHOOL for the remainder of this school year. Thank you for all of your help and support in that effort.

On March 9, 2021, EC opened its doors, once again, to UC’s Hoxworth Blood Drive. For the first time since 2015, donors flooded registration hoping to help surrounding hospitals by replenishing the blood bank. After a year of uncertainty, donations were much needed. This philanthropic adventure was organized in collaboration with the EC StuCo moderators and executives and garnered 62 donors consisting of faculty, staff, and students.. Although the numbers were limited due to COVID, emails requesting a chance to participate gave organizers more than enough individuals to fill in spots should a time open up. Next year, EC StuCo hopes to not only host another drive but increase the numbers of donors! What a way to be a SUPERHERO!

AP Exam Dates

ECHS will be participating in Administration #1 for AP exams. The College Board AP Exam dates for this administration are May 3 - May 17. At this time, the student's last day for the semester is May 12. These testing dates are set by the College Board and can not be changed. AP Biology and Statistics students are asked to plan ahead as their subject tests are on May 14 & 17 respectively.

Career Technical Education

The Governor’s Workforce Cabinet has released the 2021-22 Career Guide. Students are encouraged to utilize this valuable resource when they are exploring programs of study in the CTE area. It includes a variety of information relevant to CTE, including Work-Based Learning, In-Demand Occupations within the state of Indiana, Graduation Pathways, and Career Clusters.

Outstanding Students of the Month

KYRA HALL

East Central High School is excited to announce Ms. Kyra Hall as Student of the Month. Kyra is a senior at ECHS and is the daughter of Scott and Bella Hall. She carries a very impressive 4.181 GPA. Kyra is a 4-year member of the Varsity Swim Team, National Honor Society and the Student Ambassadors. She is the Student Council Vice President as well as the Chairman of the Student Council Marketing committee.

Kyra’s success in the classroom is nothing short of her incredible success in the pool. Kyra has been East Central’s swim team captain for two years while shattering school swimming records. She is a 3x State qualifier and State Finalist. She is a 2x ECHS MVP and a 3x Conference MVP. Kyra was named to the All-Conference team four consecutive years. She is a 2x sectional champion and has received multiple awards including the IHSAA Outstanding Achievement and State Top 16 Award. ECHS Swim Coach Brandon Loveless had a hard time describing Kyra in one sentence. He said, “Kyra Hall is someone that just gets it. She knows what it takes for her to be the best. Whether it's in the classroom, pool, or teaching and coaching swimming, she does the little things that make the big things possible. She also makes our team go. The success of our swimming and diving program over the last four years has largely been because of what she brings day in and day out. East Central was lucky enough to have her for 4 years. Her impact on our program and on the community will be felt for many years after she graduates”.

When Kyra is not training in the pool she is coaching youth swim club, instructing youth swim lessons. Kyra does enjoy painting, drawing, singing, reading and listening to music in what little free time she has. She is undecided where she will attend college at this time however she knows she wants to study Athletic Training. Kyra thanks her dad for never giving up or doubting her. She says “he taught me values and life skills that she will carry forever”. Kyra’s advice for other student athletes is to “not procrastinate, keep priorities in order and to learn how to delegate wisely”.

KOLE VIEL

East Central High School is proud to announce that Kole Viel has been selected as a Student of the Month. Kole is a senior at ECHS and is the son of Pauline and Dave Viel. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has maintained a 3.66 GPA. Kole is a 4-year athlete in both ECHS wrestling and football. His passion for sports and his leadership skills are undeniable and the main reason he was selected as a captain his senior year for both wrestling and football. Kole qualified for the IHSAA Wrestling State competition his junior year. He has received a plethora of awards during his tenure at ECHS including 2020 Conference Defense MVP, the 4-A All-State Team and the Indiana Region 10 Team.

Kole’s lives each and every day with the same advice he gives to underclassmen, “no dream or goal is too hard to reach if you put your mind to it and work hard at everything you do”. Kole’s dream to play at the next level came true. He is committed to playing football at University of Indianapolis where he plans to study Criminal Justice or Business Management.

When Kole is not in the weight room he more than likely can be found spending time with his family and friends. He acknowledges that he would not be the young man he is today without his mom and her support. Congratulations Kole!

Spring Break is an excellent time to consider college visits and job shadowing opportunities without impacting attendance. Students can contact colleges to schedule visits directly with admissions.

Remember, the FAFSA is now open until the April 15th deadline for Indiana. Students should follow up with counselors with admission issues or concerns, and they will assist with contacting colleges with questions particular to the students’ needs.

Counselors are available to assist students with college questions and appeal processes for admission if needed. In the month of May counselors will share with seniors how to send final transcripts from East Central, Ivy Tech. and IU to their selected college. We will also be gathering information for plans after graduation and scholarships that they have been selected for so we can recognize them.

April 7th at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center is the National Honor Society program for Senior recognition and Junior induction. Senior Scholarship Awards program will be held on May 12th at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center. Invitations for both events are given to students who need to attend prior to the event.

Juniors:

ASVAB testing is scheduled for April 7th. This test is a qualifier for graduation pathways. Any student that needs this opportunity for testing will be invited to test that morning.

SAT and ACT testing dates are available with most updated options in the attachments below. Juniors need to make sure that SAT and/or ACT testing is completed this year so they can apply to colleges upon the start of their senior year. Certain schools (UC, IU, Purdue, Miami Oxford, NCAA) require that test scores be sent directly from the testing center to be official. With Covid, colleges have been moving to test optional for admission but this could change the following year so testing is still recommended.

April 7th at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center is the National Honor Society program for Senior recognition and Junior induction. Juniors who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher will be invited and inducted into the National Honor Society.

Sophomores: Students interested in the Southeastern Career Center need to complete the enrollment form found HERE. This form has been posted in the English Google Classroom as well as emailed to students. Since we are not able to have in-person presentations this year, this VIDEO is available to students/parents to see what SCC has to offer especially for those who need an alternative option for Graduation Pathways.

Scheduling will be completed by the end of February for the following year with changes accepted until the end of the year. Students should be focusing on grades and career/college exploration.

Ivy Tech College Connection Coach

To support high school students and help them explore future career and college opportunities, Ivy Tech is providing a College Connection Coach dedicated to East Central students. Wendi Karle started working with students in late February and will be on site each Wednesday in the Guidance Suite as the College Connection Coach. As a graduate of East Central, and with a background in secondary education, as well as college and career development, she is invested in helping students achieve success. Save Time, Save Money, Get a Degree

The Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP) is an 11-month program which is student focused and designed to support, encourage, and mentor students throughout their first year of college. This program is great for students who prefer smaller class sizes and who prefer to be on a first name basis with their professors. ASAP works with students to build confidence before transferring to a 4-year university to get their bachelor’s degree or going into the workforce. Applications are now being accepted for the next cohort. NCWIT AiC Award Winners for Computer Science

EC Business Department is celebrating now having a national award winning Computer Science Program! This fall, Emma Green(11), Holli Plowman(12), and Lydia Smith(12) each applied for Aspirations in Computing(AiC) awards through the National Center for Women & Information Technology(NCWIT). Emma was awarded a regional “Affiliate Honorable Mention” for the state of Indiana, and Holli and Lydia were both awarded a “National Certificate of Distinction” for their work in Computer Science while here at East Central. We are so excited for these individuals and proud of their hard work and dedication!

Students in Mr. Boyd's Computers in Design and Production class are designing wood boxes in 3d modeling software to be cut out on the Techno-Isel CNC Router machine. Students learn about creating the gcode machine language using the XYZ cartesian coordinate system common to most CNC machines used around the world. Students also experience designing and creating machine codes for the Hurricane 60 watt laser engraver/cutter.

Weather folklore says that “if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.” I would like to use that notion for the 2020-2021 school year. The first half of the school year was certainly the proverbially lion with Covid-19 dominating our everyday lives; however, it seems like there might be a light at the end of the tunnel, a beacon of hope, a sense of normalcy on the horizon.

As a reminder, March 15-19 is an e-learning week, and the English department is ready to engage our students from a distance. Mrs. Tucker’s English 9 classes will be participating in a “Rhyming Ruckus,” where students will be exposed to different types of poetry in a March Madness-style bracket tournament. Mrs. Ketcham’s English 9 will explore “a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity” by analyzing episodes from The Twilight Zone. Mrs. Jansing will add to the suspense by reading a twisted mystery by Andy Weir. Mr. Meiners’ English 10 classes will be studying the theme of happiness, while Mrs. Jackson’s English 10 will reflect on the Holocaust by reading Elie Wiesel’s Night. Mrs. Rose-Ronnebaum’s English 11 will be studying the American Dream, while Mrs. Stanley’s English 11 will explore Women’s History Month. Finally, Mrs. Trossman and Mrs. Pieczonka will continue to read works by British author Neil Gaiman with their English 12 classes, and Mrs. Ketcham’s Honors English 12 is exploring the Victorian era and the world’s most famous detective: Sherlock Holmes. Not to be left out, AP Lit and AP Lang will be hard at work, practicing for the AP test in May.

With three quarters completed, I am ready for Spring to be the lamb we all have been waiting for. Have a happy and safe Spring Break!

Adv Nutrition and Wellness

Students in Advanced Nutrition and Wellness focused their energy on the nutrient: minerals. We learned about the impact of mineral deficiencies, especially minerals of concern like calcium and potassium. We have also been identifying the impact carbohydrates can have on our health. Added sugars were also a big topic of conversation as we identified the impact they can have on our nutrition and our overall health. The snow days and delays really messed with our food labs during this month, but we are getting back on track now.

Preparing for College and Careers

Students in Preparing for College and Careers spent some time identifying personal financial goals before we started to explore the world of financial literacy. Students are practicing a variety of financial skills in a game-like setting and they have the opportunity to earn a certificate for their hard work. We have practiced some skills together in class and discussed the importance of building good financial habits and strengthening these skills before graduation.

Child Development

Students explored the MyPlate guidelines and the importance of good nutrition and overall health during pregnancy. They identified essential nutrients that are vital to fetal development. Students also spent some time discovering safe exercise options during pregnancy and healthy stress relief activities. They even had an opportunity to "feel" what it is like to be pregnant by trying on the Empathy Belly.

Introduction to Fashion and Textiles

Students in Introduction to Fashion and Textiles have learned to do basic crochet. Many persevered and made a crochet headband. They also learned about finishes that are put on fabrics for different reasons for example flame retardant finish on children’s clothing. We are now preparing for our next major sewing project which will include a button down shirt, a romper, a stuffed animal or fleece jacket.

Advanced Child Development

How does the brain work? Students have been learning about which part of the brain does what and how neural pathways work. They have also discovered that the child’s brain prunes off neural pathways that are not being used. For the intellectual development unit, we also investigated children’s toys that will increase parent-child interaction that will further enhance intellectual development.

Education Professions

The cadet teachers continue to learn a variety of skills including classroom management, lesson planning and classroom instruction. In addition, the dual credit class for this semester is Child and Adolescent development and students are currently learning about intellectual development of an infant and toddler.

FCCLA-Members of FCCLA are gearing up for the annual FCCLA State Conference. They are currently working on their STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) Events. Through STAR Event Projects, Becca Tupper and Bella Woodyard have collected pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House and had a Birthday Party for Ronald with all gifts going to the Ronald McDonald House. Josie Volpenhein and Jayme Pennington taught kindergarten students about School Bus Safety. Lara Moster and Olivia Stenger created virtual cooking lessons and sent home supply kits with 24 6th graders. Lydia Trabel, Natalie Klei and Maria Deddens advocated for cursive handwriting to be taught to 3rd graders in Mrs. Klei’s class. Karly Scholl and Maycey Lewis taught Mrs. May’s class about the importance of handwashing. Hayley Lewis held eat dinner with your family night-virtual style and families were received a lasagna and breadstick kit to prepare at home and then logged in on a google meets. We also celebrated FCCLA Week February 8-12th. It has been a busy month!

The art department is very excited to announce that we will be having a student art show for all the talented ECHS students. The art show is scheduled for April 24 and April 25. A two day event from 12 to 3. The art show will be at the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. Each participant will be given two tickets for a family member or friend to attend. The art show will have ceramics, paintings, drawings, photography, and digital design works.

In other art news, digital photography students had the opportunity to learn about how to create light painting photography. Light painting is a photographic technique of using a moving light source- such as a flashlight, glow stick, light brush, or even a smartphone to alter an image while taking a long exposure photography. Additionally, the students have been learning about studio portrait lighting. The students are learning about how to be creative with color lights and how to light up the face and not create shadows. Below are some of the students having fun and getting creative!

Gimkit

There is an amazing resource out there that teachers love to use and students love to play! And Gimkit is its name. Madame White has incorporated Gimkit at least once a week in all levels of her French classes for the past few months. Gimkit is the ultimate mashup of Kahoot, Quizizz, and Quizlet! There are different modes that students can play such as classic, team, humans v. zombies, and many more! The most popular has been “Trust No One” which mimics the popular game “Among Us”. Students have to answer questions correctly to run investigations on other classmates and try to vote out the imposter! Even Madame White enjoys playing the game with her kiddos (and enjoys even more when she’s the imposter!). Gimkit has been a game changer (no pun intended) in Madame White’s French classes!

The math department is relieved to have the ISTEP testing complete. We were very concerned about it since we had so many e-learning days due to the snow! We wish all of our Juniors who tested a very heartfelt GOOD LUCK!! You are preserving through all of the craziness this school year had to endure!

They will be presenting information on how to build healthy relationships, develop self respect, communicate effectively, and resolve conflicts in healthy ways. https://safepassageinc.org/

In Mrs Carleton’s Earth and Science Classes, students designed and constructed a building from balsa wood that could withstand a simulated earthquake. The structure had to hold 5 metal plates that simulated the load on the floors of a 20-story, 200-foot high building. Upon completion of their construction, students placed their building on the earthquake simulator to see if their design would survive this type of natural disaster. This challenging project offered students the ability to brainstorm, design, measure, create, improvise, and work as a team to achieve their goals.

In Mrs. Hoffman’s Chemistry classes they completed Unit 4 in Chemistry I. They used balanced equations to compare stoichiometric values of reactants and products. Some students investigated common charge comparisons using experimental data for the copper and iron nail lab. Many students made and collected solid products from solutions known as precipitates. They also made table salt and compared our amount of product made to what should be made from the starting materials. We moved on to gases and started with a quick activity to observe movement of gases and their behavior. Next we will investigate how different measurements of gases are related.

In Mr. Medlock’s Biomedical science classes students were able to explore how skin diseases and disorders affect the epidermis and dermis

In Mr. Maluvac’s Anatomy and Physiology courses the students just finished learning about muscle structures and identifying 70 major muscles of the human body.

In Mr. Owen's American History classes, they have just finished the unit on the First World War, and are now beginning a unit that examines the cultural, economic, and political consequences of the Treaty of Versailles. All classes have been conducting research to prepare writing their semester projects.
