MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Arleta Community,
I hope everyone is healthy and finding ways to cope during these very unsettling times. In my mind I know we will get through all of this but day by day I find it extremely challenging. I'm sure you do too. I've been thinking of our students and how difficult it must be for them to understand. I know I speak for the entire staff when I say the well-being of our students, and families, has weighed heavy on our hearts and minds.
One thing that helps is clear and accurate information. This is an unprecedented situation and PPS staff have been working very hard to develop plans, but there is still a lot of fluidity and work to be done. I expect there will be a great deal of information coming out this week from the PPS central office but this is what I know as of today.
For the Arleta staff, this next week will be about preparing to work with students after this week. Teachers will be engaged in professional development activities to learn about the platforms and content to be used for both online collaboration with students and collaboration with students unable to access the internet. We also expect those of you who asked to obtain a Chromebook for your child to learn this week how that will be accomplished. In the meantime, you may find the PPS Student Portal useful, https://sites.google.com/apps4pps.net/portal/pps-student-portal This link is also on our website.
Many of you have asked if you can access the building to pick up student items. At this point the answer is no. Only custodians are allowed to enter the building in order to clean. Once an area is cleaned it is important that no one re-enter the area. I am not allowed to access the building either. I'll let you know when this changes.
We are engaging in a process to improve our website as a communication tool. Look for helpful changes as the week progresses. We will provide links to information as it is provided by the district.
Thank you for your patience and flexibility. We are learning as we go but I assure you that the Arleta staff is working hard and we care deeply about your children. Please do not hesitate to contact me by email at jhorn@pps.net or my Secretary, Alexis Tanner (atanner@pps.net).
Be well.
John Horn

WONDERING HOW YOU CAN HELP, OR ACCESS RESOURCES?
Support Community & Stay Involved
In a time of crisis, we can respond to the needs of our community with collective power and mutual aid. Please make a donation today to support the efforts of PDX COVID-19 Mutual Aid Network.
The funds raised here will be used to respond to requests for support from the community, This will include buying food and supplies for those in need, as well as reimbursing volunteers for transportation and other related costs.
Requests are prioritized for those who are sick, unhoused, disabled, quarantined without pay, elderly, undocumented, trans and queer, Black, Indigenous, People of Color, including immigrants, refugees, and those who have been displaced from Portland to nearby areas.

Portland United Against Hate
Have you witnessed hate related to COVID-19? Viruses do not discriminate but misinformation is leading to decreased patronage for small businesses operated by Asian Americans and increased racist comments from a false association between these communities and respiratory infections. With any public health issue, the most important thing to do is follow the advice of trusted public health authorities and let facts - not fear or anxiety - inform our decisions. We are in this together and will make it through by supporting one another and uniting against any form of discrimination. Together we can make Portland safer and support each other!
If you or someone else experiences bullying, bias, and hate please report it to www.ReportHatePDX.com.
PTA MESSAGE
Raise your hand if you miss school! We sure do!
The PTA is planning to have our regularly scheduled meeting VIRTUALLY on April 14th at 6pm. We'll provide a link in next week's newsletter and on Facebook (@ArletaK8). We hope you'll join to discuss ways the PTA can best support families during this stressful time. We'd love to hear from you!
Got other ideas to improve our school? Consider taking on a board or committee role. The commitment can be as little or as much time as you can give and all are welcome! Read about the positions available here. Email ArletaSchoolPTA@gmail.com if you have questions.
We look forward to seeing you back at school! Thank you for supporting the Arleta PTA!
RUN FOR THE ARTS
With so much up in the air, we're not sure our tradition Run for the Arts event will happen before the end of the school year. However we are trying to organize a virtual run to coincide with a virtual Spirit Week.
This would mean students can still collect pledges, and with the help of parents, set up their own 1/4 mile course to run/walk for 30 minutes and count laps. This would be a great way to keep kids active and support arts at Arleta (while keeping to distancing guidelines)!
We'll send information out soon via facebook and email/newsletter if a virtual run is scheduled.
BOTTLE DROP IS STILL OPEN
APRIL 22 IS EARTH DAY'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY!
Show your care for the earth through a poem or a short audio message. The Eco-School Network will publish your work and contact the local news. You can download a flyer here.
Submissions are due April 1st and more information can be found on the Eco-School Network website: https://ecoschoolnetwork.org/events/speakout/
AMAZON WISH LIST FOR TEACHERS & STAFF
Throughout the school year, supplies are consumed and new needs arise. That’s why Arleta now has an Amazon Wish List of items added by teachers and staff. Please consider adding an item or two when you do your regular Amazon shopping. And when you use Amazon Smile and link your Amazon account to Arleta School PTA, Amazon will also donate 0.5% of your total purchase (at no additional cost to you)! Questions – email ArletaSchoolPTA@gmail.com
Link to Wish List is: https://smile.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3S713LRBVHEI6
And instructions can be found here: http://www.arletapta.org/ways-to-help---join.html
NO COST WAYS TO SUPPORT ARLETA
The Arleta PTA participates in THREE no-cost shopping rewards programs - Fred Meyer Community Rewards, AmazonSmile and Bottle Drop.
1. By linking your Fred Meyer Rewards card to the Arleta PTA and scanning your rewards card when you shop, a percentage of your purchase goes to the PTA. Sign up here. (And you'll still get your cash back rewards!)
2. Amazon has a similar program, called AmazonSmile. Select "Arleta School PTA" as your charitable organization to receive donations when you shop Amazon. Once you sign up, just go to smile.amazon.com to do your usual Amazon shopping. While there is no app, you can create a shortcut on your phone by going to smile.amazon.com in your browser, tap the Share button, then tap Add to Homescreen.
3. Donate your redeemable cans and bottles to Arleta through Bottle Drop. Grab a blue bag from the school office and FILL it up then take it to a Bottle Drop site, OR email arletabottledrop@gmail.com and someone will come pick it up. (Arleta pays a fee for the bags, so let's fill them to the top!)
