Brown School Buzz Summer Edition
August 7, 2023
Happy August Brown School Families!
Yes, it true, August has arrived. And while we still have 4 weeks until the first day of school, I am quite certain back-to-school thoughts and conversations have begun in many of your homes. Indeed, we have been busy at the Brown School all summer getting ready for the upcoming year. Materials and supplies, as well as new students are arriving every week. We have been planning for the new reading curriculum, and teachers have engaged in a number of trainings, coursework and professional development experiences. We also had more than 75 students at Brown this summer for some sort of summer learning experience.
If you are like most of us, we begin the summer with hopes and plans for a host of activities we want to do during our very short New England summer. If you haven't yet conquered that Summer Bucket List, it's not too late! So have a dinner picnic at the lighthouse, ride the rail trails with the kids, try a new beach, build a sandcastle, have a neighborhood potluck, and eat s'mores!
As parents, we also begin the summer hoping we will be able to keep our kids reading and learning throughout the 10 weeks they are not at school. And often, because our summer schedules are less predictable, this can fall by the wayside. Well, it's not too late for this either!
Share a chapter book together, visit the library, or just explore new books for kids (trade with the neighbors). The Association for Library Service to Children has great summer reading lists for kids. CLICK HERE for titles! To keep kids thinking, play card and dice games strengthen number sense or start a Daily Family Brainteaser routine! These are great to post on the fridge in the morning and talk about at dinner. Creating summer memories doesn't have to be complicated.
As you revisit your summer bucket lists, I wish you all 4 more fun-filled, memorable weeks of summer!
Placement Information
Our preliminary placement process was completed in June by teachers, administrators, counselors, special educators, and Allied Arts teachers. However, students continue to come and go throughout the summer which always impacts placement. We thank you for respecting the placement process and the work teacher put into the process. You will be receiving your child's placement via Aspen email. If you do not receive your child's placement, please be sure to check your Aspen account to be sure your email is correct and check you spam/junk mail. If you do not receive the email, please reach out to our school secretaries. They can make sure you receive the information you need.
We are planning on sending classroom placement information on August 18th. The Aspen update is also scheduled to occur the same week. Barring any tech glitches, we should be ready to send out placements to all by the 18th.
School Advisory Committee-
We have openings on our Brown School Advisory Council for the upcoming year. The committee is typically comprised of approximately 7-12 members who are staff members and community members. The committee meets once a month to help develop and review our School Improvement Plan, provide information, and discuss student achievement and success. If you are interested in serving on this year's SAC, please let me know.
