Students Building Bridges to Success in STEM
The Oley Valley Middle School’s STEM Class is currently designing and building wood bridges. This activity is a hands on introduction to engineering which also incorporates math skills through the design of a truss bridge.
The 8th grade STEM students received a unique set of constraints and criteria which simulates a weighted load on their bridges. Using a stress analyzer and bridge designer software students created a unique truss design. Then they took their designs and created their bridge using materials provided by the teacher. Each trimester a new material is added or removed from the constraints. This trimester string was added, and a few groups have decided to design their bridges based on the suspension bridge design.
This is one of the students' favorite projects of the semester, especially when it comes to load testing them.

Spring Sport signups will take place during lunch periods in early February. Spring Sports Physical Packets and/or Re-Certification Forms will be distributed during the lunch sign-ups and will be due to the Athletic Office by February 24th. As a reminder, any student participating in a sport must have a physical performed after June 1, 2016 for the first sport of the school year that they participate. Any subsequent sport participation during the same school year only requires a re-certification form to participate in the next season. Your cooperation in submitting all forms by the February 24th deadline is greatly appreciated and also helps ensure a smooth start to the Spring season! HS Spring Sports will start on March 6th, MS Spring Sports will start on March 14th. Spring schedules can be found on the athletic website and practice schedules will be posted by mid-February.
The Winter Athletic Booster Club fundraiser has been distributed to all Winter athletes. This year they are selling daily lottery raffle tickets, Redner’s hoagie ticket and Reading Fightin’ Phils tickets. All winter athletes are asked to try their best to support the Booster Club fundraising efforts or make a contribution to the Booster Club if they are able to do so. The booster club is a non-profit organization so all donations are tax deductible. Winter fundraising packets are due back to the Athletic Office by Friday, January 27th.
On March 7th at 7:30OPM in the High School Cafeteria there will be an information session for all parents of student-athletes in grades 8-12 on NCAA requirements and what it takes to play a sport at the collegiate level. This parent and student presentation is designed for anyone who may be interested in intercollegiate athletics whether it be at a NCAA institution or other college options that also provide athletic scholarships. If you would like more information on this presentation or find out if it is something that may benefit your family please do not hesitate to contact the Athletic Office.
