Digital Update -- January 2017

OVMS & OVHS Join Forces for a Good Cause

On December 23, 2016, students and staff from the middle and high schools joined forces to raise money for the One Wish Foundation. According to their website, "The One Wish Foundation provides children with life-altering medical or social conditions the opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime outdoor adventure."

Students and staff participated in the 2nd Annual Kan Jam Tournament. Over 145 teams participated in the event which raised over $1600 for the One Wish Foundation. The winners of the tournament were Tanner Maddocks, Gage Andreas, Mrs. Cappellano and Mr. Snyder. They each received their own Kan Jam set as a prize. Mr. Renninger, the President of One Wish accepted the donation and thanked the schools for their kindness.

More information regarding the One Wish Foundation can be found by visiting their website here.

Oley Valley Elementary School Update

Kindergarten Gingerbread Exchange

Miss Baugh and Miss Snyder’s kindergarten classes kicked off December by creating baker gingerbread boys and girls for over forty schools across the United States for Social Studies. As a group, both classes wrote letters about Oley, what they are learning, and how the weather is and mailed them with the gingerbread. Throughout December, each class received twenty different gingerbread with corresponding letters telling us about different states and schools in the United States. Some of our favorites included Pete the Cats gingerbread from South Dakota and Tennessee and a Kentucky Derby gingerbread from Kentucky. We also loved our baseball gingerbread boy from Illinois. We loved learning about states that included Hawaii and the volcanoes and Alaska where students play outside in -10 degree weather. Each day we enjoyed placing them on our big United States map and coloring in the states on our own individual gingerbread map. We loved learning that schools around the United States are very different from our own and it made Social Studies fun!

Oley Valley Middle School Update

Students Building Bridges to Success in STEM

The Oley Valley Middle School’s STEM Class is currently designing and building wood bridges. This activity is a hands on introduction to engineering which also incorporates math skills through the design of a truss bridge.

The 8th grade STEM students received a unique set of constraints and criteria which simulates a weighted load on their bridges. Using a stress analyzer and bridge designer software students created a unique truss design. Then they took their designs and created their bridge using materials provided by the teacher. Each trimester a new material is added or removed from the constraints. This trimester string was added, and a few groups have decided to design their bridges based on the suspension bridge design.

This is one of the students' favorite projects of the semester, especially when it comes to load testing them.

FFA Students Shine at the Farm Show

We are pleased to announce this year we had 6 students earn their PA FFA Keystone Degree at the FFA Mid-Winter Convention at the Farm Show: Nate Guldin, Jenna Ulrich, Emily Brensinger, Polly Prout, Hannah Levengood, and Zaren Kerper. This Keystone Degree is the highest FFA Degree that a member can receive from the Pennsylvania FFA Association. It is based on leadership, chapter involvement, academic achievement, community service, and completion of an SAE with $1000.00 earned or invested or has a minimum of 300 hours completed.

Nate Guldin was selected as the State Keystone Star in Agribusiness and will represent Pennsylvania at the Eastern States Exposition (Big E) held in Springfield, Massachusetts in September. Great job Nate!

This year seven FFA members received a complimentary FFA Jacket from the PA FFA Alumni Association. These FFA members competed in a contest by writing an essay on what the FFA jacket means to them. The following FFA members received a jacket: Andrew Schaeffer, Danielle Trimbur, Hailey Hopkins, Haley Weidman, Hollie Bower, Paige Rohrbach, and Sierra Keppel.
